10. George Henry CRAIG (George Edward,
William) was born 3 Mar 1853 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He died
7 Sep 1923 in Plymouth, MA, USA.
The following information was obtained
March 19, 1998 at NEHGS (New England Historical and Genealogical
Society, Newbury St., Boston, MA, 5th floor Library.
From "The History of Dartmouth" by
John Patrick Martin, B.A., LL.D. Ó 1957
Pgs. 55 & 56
"All the water lots and town lots on
both sides of the original Portland Street line of Steamboat Hill
were Crown Land grants to the Steamboat Company at its incorporation
in 1816. The present Simonds property was then owned by Mrs. Jane
Jackson, but from about 1840 onward, the building was occupied by
Dominick Farrell, prosperous liquor and grocery merchant of the last
century.
The whole block opposite Farrell's was
gradually acquired by the MacDonald family of tobacco fame, who had
retreated to rural Dartmouth during the 1834 cholera epidemic in
Halifax. Their snuff mill was at MacDonald's Lake. On the present
Royal Bank location stood Macdonald's Hall where the great Joseph
Howe often captivated his hearers. At Queen St. corner until about
1900, was Allan MacDonald's fishing tackle and tobacco shop with a
shiny metal fish dangling from a pole over the entrance.
Diagonally opposite, in the present
Lesbirel building, lived George H. Craig, perhaps the most versatile
citizen of the time. His aptitudes included those of a photographer,
artist, musician, horticulturist, landscape gardener, barber, writer
and punster. In the elevated doorway of his combined photographic
studio, barber and cigar shop, stood the customary wooden
Indian.
In the basement were two concrete bath
tubs, four feet in depth. Here patrons indulged in steaming Turkish
baths of salt water which had been piped in from the harbor, and
heated. In the yard was a profusion of flowers and fruits, including
cultivated grapes. The adjoining building on the north was fitted up
with long skittle alleys.
Mr. Craig took hundreds of photographs
of Dartmouth people and places. Among his numerous paintings on
display was one depicting the Expulsion of the Acadians. It covered a
stretch of canvas nine feet wide, and contained 500 figures. In the
middle was Colonel John Winslow, who commanded the
expedition."
Pg. 405
"The present Lesbirel building on
Commercial Street was erected for George Craig, the
barber-photographer, by Contractor John T. Walker, also in 1879. This
soon became the leading tonsorial parlor in town and was patronized
by leading citizens. As has already been explained on page 55, Mr.
Craig possessed considerable talent and ambition. As a young man he
worked regularly as a factory hand in the Ropeworks, and employed his
nightly leisure learning the barbering trade."
Pg. 412
"Construction work in 1881 included a
two-storey bowling alley and billiard hall for George Craig adjoining
his premises on Water Street."
I am not exactly sure which George
Craig this was, but guess it was the George H. born in 1854. As he
would only have been 25 in 1879 it would seem he had accomplished
quite a bit in a short time, particularly given the times. On page
405, it states, " As a young man he worked regularly as a factory
hand in the Ropeworks, and employed his nightly leisure learning the
barbering trade." How old would he have been when he worked in the
Ropeworks? Also, I could not get a clear idea from the book what time
period pages 55 & 56 were about.
There was a date of 1816, 1834 and
1900. I read both before and after, but it didn't shed any light on
the date. If anyone can figure this out, please let me know. I do
believe the painting, "Expulsion of the Acadians", was done by the
George Henry Craig, born in 1854, who later emigrated to North
Easton, MA.
