Thanksgiving at Our House

Thanksgiving at our house has always been.....well..... interesting!   While I can trace my lineage back through Colonial times (and, yes, George Washington really did sleep at a Digges house! Kinda makes you wonder why the man owned a bed of his own, doesn't it? LOL!) clear to 1200 AD in England; my husband's truck proudly sports a bumper sticker reading:

My ancestors didn't come over on the Mayflower...

They met the boat!!

I do not intend to go here into the political, moral, or ethical ramifications of who took who's land when, or how badly they have messed it up since, but I will share my hubby's philosophy: When Columbus "discovered" America, there was no federal government and no taxation. The men hunted and fished all day, while the women did all the work. Along came the white man, and thought he could improve on a situation like that!!

We have always tried to use differences in attitude, experience, knowledge, and upbringing to enhance and embellish celebrations, rather than get into a "Who's Right?" contest over them! I think it is important to remember that ALL Mayflower descendants owe a debt of gratitude to the Wampanoag. Without the help of Samoset and Tisquantum, the Pilgrims would likely have starved to death that first winter. And without the help of Hobomok and Tokamahamon, peace would never have been achieved, and the Pilgrims and Native Americans would have fought and killed one another. Without the leadership of Massasoit and Quadequina, the Pilgrims would never have gained the protection and friendship given by their neighbors, the Wampanoag confederation. That being said, let us remember:

Some of the THANKS I'm GIVING this season:

* Always first, my wonderful family.
* Update to above - That our new Great-granddaughters Hailey and Hannah, though arriving 2 months early not only survive, but THRIVE!

* That they had that first feast, so we can all be here today!

* That, though we have not always had what we wanted to eat,
we have always had plenty to eat.

* That my Mom continues to amaze her doctors by doing so well.

* That we have friends, both old and new, who genuinely CARE.

* That I woke up this morning!

* Warm winds, firm hugs, soft smiles.

When my "attitude of gratitude" takes a little slip,
help me to remember to also give thanks for those things I have NOT!

* I have NOT a catastophic illness.

* I have NOT a husband who expects more of me than I can be.

* I have NOT a child or grandchild in unrelievable suffering.

* I have NOT a two-year old in full time residence!(LOL)
(Though we loved 'em when we had 'em, I'm glad we had 'em when we did!)
