Yours alone to fill with memories....
Some perhaps of laughter,
Some which brought you tears.
What have you dropped into your bowl
As you traveled through the years?
Perhaps the kiss that an old friend
Placed upon your cheek,
Perhaps a handful of crystal sand
Picked up on a windswept beach.
Did you save a glimpse of a bright sunrise
As a brand new day began?
The chirping of a little bird,
A favorite hymn or a prayer heard?
The strong handclasp of a stranger met
A red, red rose--a fall sunset.
Are there some bits of wisdom
Gained through a mind left open?
Some bitter words which upon second thought
You chose to leave unspoken?
Are there beliefs acquired,
though at first there was doubt?
Success--merely failure you turned inside out?
Does it matter a lot if wealth isn't there?
That spot may be filled by a kindness shared.
You should have put in some dreams
And surely some stars.
If those weren't included,
you haven't gone far.
Your bowl overflows, it has filled very fast.
What memories were shared
as the years hurried past?
Did you carelessly toss
in floatsam and glass,
Or does everything there have
a true touch of class?
