Kohumaru school was built about 1920 from pit-sawn kauri timber by the fathers of the
potential pupils. Pupils were able to walk the short distance of 1½ miles to three
swimming ponds in the Kohumaru River. The bush started a few chains from the school but
was cut and burnt back by 1930. Pupils were inclined to think the school boundaries to be
wherever you 'could just hear the bell'.

By 1934 a metal road wound through Kohumaru and in 30 Sep 1937 pupils transferred
to Mangonui School and Kohumaru school was closed.
