I know little of my grandmother who was married to Kirikau Poihipi Rutene.
I would appreciate anyone who possess the knowledge of my father's whanau. My father's name
is Ronald Hatupatu Poihipi Rutene - shorten for registration purposes. Ron Poi nickname
(shorty Ron). At home he was known as Hatu.

the whakapapa i have states that te ururoa was of the te taahawai hapu based at whangaroa
in tai tokerau during the early to mid 1800's (there is a marae with that name across the
river from the village of kaeo). i assume (but don't know for sure) that means strong
ngapuhi and ngati kahu connections. indeed, when james berghan came from ireland and
married turikatuku makareta (te ururoa's daughter) they were given land in ngati kahu
rohe around mangonui, and when the land courts sat many ngati kahu leaders rose to speak
on james berghan's behalf as to his right to hold the land.
i found out that te ururoa also went by the name rewharewha through several references to
him in the nz dictionary of biography where he is mentioned as being hongi hika's right
hand man and brother in law. interestingly hongi's wife was called turikatuku (i cannot
find out if hongi's wife was rewharewha's sister or vice versa) but whatever te ururoa/
rewharewha gave his daughter that name.
one would imagine that in those days there would have been considerable tension between
tainui and ngapuhi considering the musket raids led by hongi and rewharewha into their
territory. by all acounts my ancestor rewharewha picked up his other name (te ururoa: the
shark) from his time in hongi's war parties.

I am a direct descendant of Hongi Hika, he is my Great Grandfather (8 generations back).
The marae that Iaramay speaks of (Te Huia) is my whanau marae. I do know of Te Ururoa and
I know that the Flavell whanau stem from him. I have an uncle who has done extensive
geneaology work on this and I know he can help you. You contact me via my personal email

I'm interested as to the name Rewharewha. My grandfather's line has that name. It
originated with Putiki Rewharewha my great grandfather, then my grandfather was Whareparoa.
The family come from Ngaitai of Torere, Bay of Plenty, and the line originates from Tainui.I
s there any relationship to your Te Ururoa? Would like to know more. This is exciting for
me. Thanks.

I have now confirmed that are also James and Epsibah Howard and that Epsibah died on 31st
December 1907. They are probably buried in the Thames area but I still would like to
confirm this. Epsibah was the daughter of William and Rangipika Anihara.

drive buses for Riches bus line he was married into the waaka family from Arowhenua.
haven't live in NZ for the passed 25 years but I hope it helps you a little bit.If you

Should you be searching for Wehipeihana of Ngati Raukawa ki te tonga. You might like to try
contacting the whanau at Ngati Tukorohe ki Kapiti.
Wehipeihana are a well known family who live in Otaki and Manukau (kuku) on the kapiti
coast. Since you live in Austrialia you may wish to have a look at the marae shown by a
tourist who stayed there recently. Go "Google" search, type in Ngati Tukorehe, have a look.
Unfortunately its not about whakapapa but it will give you a look at where the
Whehipeihana whanau reside.

Possibly best to either check with the marae for any historic links to people with these
names, or the tribe, Tuwharetoa, itself. Who knows you may turn up something really

The first thing I would do is to check the extended family, they will have some sort of
rumour as to which areas/tribes you are from.
Then check the Maori Electoral Rolls to see if any of the above people or their siblings
are listed and what they state to be their tribes, then Id get in contact with the tribe.
Id also find out what religion they were in and check the archives there, etc.,

There is a Wiremu Kingi in my whakapapa line. He comes from Torere area in the Bay of
Plenty. Tribe is Ngaitai. Is there any relationship to your family? Kia ora.

Hi Pa,
It depends on how and where you go to find your genealogy as to whether fee's are involved.
I agree with June, you find the best genealogists that you have within your family FIRST.
Then, depending on how much detail you want, you work on from there.
Some maori trust boards, elders, marae, Government departments (Births, Deaths & Marraiges),
do charge fee's for their services and time.

Speak to family members.
Get copies of Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates.
Fees are payable to Govt. Depts for these.
Do as much leg work yourself.

I am hoping that this message would reach someone out there that may be able to help me
in my search of looking for whanau connected to my mum PARAHI KAHURANGI HALLETT (nee WHIU,
RAHUI,or IHIA)
The Whiu names is her Dad
the Rahui was her mums name and
Ihia was her adopted mum and Dad.
the only thing I no of my mums family is her 5 sisters and there famlies so any information
that anyone may have no matter how big or small would be very much appreciated.

Have just come across your message. The Whiu family are from Ngapuhi iwi in Northland.
There is a police officer in Kaikohe by the name of Paddy Whiu. I believe he may be able
to tell you what you need to know about the Whiu name.
