Ngati Maniapoto Marae?

Hi
I was just wandering if someone can tell me how I can find out which Marae my family are
at. I know that my fathers family is part of the Ngati Maniapoto tribe and grew up in
Taumaranui area. Any assistance would be wonderful, as currently I have no idea where to
begin.

I do know that the Ngarotata whanau feature in the Turner reunion book and the TeAmohanga-
Nikora Whanau reunion book. They are linked closely with both families. My husband is
related to this whanau and we have the reunion book for Nikora's but not sure about the
Turner one though I could find out.

Hi Paula
I had a quick chat to mum the other day and my fathers family is related to both Turner
and Nikora. My grandmother Tini Wikaira had a brother Ben Ngarotata who is now deceased,
but he was married to Hine (nee Nikora) who passed away this year or last year. I am yet
to ask mum of the Turner connection but she did say that dad knows of a few Turners and
Nikora's back in NZ. Some other family members just incase you are aware of them are Bobby
Ngarotata (he lives in Auckland and is my grandmothers other brother), Maurie Ngarotata
(he lives in Hamilton and is also my grandmothers brother), Billy Ngarotata (who is
deceased) and Percy Ngarotata (also deceased). I will try and find out more information,
this was just in a quick conversation with my mum after I told her about your reply to my
query. Thanks

Do you have any other information eg. fathers name, is it Ngarotata? do you know any of
his whanau? a kuia, aunt, etc. What are their names? Growing up in Taumaranui doesn't
narrow it down much.

Hi
I am trying to trace any information at all on my dads side of the family. His surname is
Ngarotata and his mothers and brothers surnames are Wikaira. He grew up in Taumaranui in
the North Island. I am in Australia though and it makes it a little difficult as I dont
know where to start to access any information at all. If anybody can help me at all it
would be much appreciated. Thank You. Kiri

Sorry, didn't see this posting. Your best bet (and i'm not being cheeky) is to get a hold
of a phone book, look for all the Ngarotata's and Wikaira's. Start with King Country
phone book and then Hamilton, Auckland, etc. There are heaps of places you can search but
the phone book is a good start. Let me know how you get on.

Kia ora,
I haven't got the phone number, but, if you look in the directory and find the number to a
marae called Te Whakarongo Tai, Kokohuia in Northland (Opononi) or Fred Toi from Main Rd
Omapere also in the directory and ask that you need to make urgent contact with Harriet
Dawson. Harriet is the sister of Makaore Taylor and will be the one most updated on where
all her whanau is. She will be quite happy to help you I'm sur. Infact try looking for
her directly in the Northland directory. If that fails e-mail me and I'll see if I can
find some of my Aunties phone numbers in Auckland and they might be able to tell you.

Good Luck!

Kia Ora, I have the names of one line of tupuna that goes quite a way back - Tapaue I
would guess was around in the 1720's?. I assume that there should be a fair amount of
information around about this whanau as Tapaue is also tupuna of Potatau Te Wherowhero. I
only have names, I want to find out more if possible ie Iwi (Tainui?), hapu (Ngati Mahuta?
Ngati te Ata?), waka, area etc and any history, also names of siblings and spouses would
fill out my family tree nicely. I am not sure who or where to ask, any info or direction
greatly appreciated.

Tena koe,
Info you seek is in "Tainui" by Kelly. However, Tapaue was the brother of Whare Tipeti,
Pareue and others. According to Kelly, Tapaue and Whare gained their notoriety around
Taupiri. My ancestor is Pareue (approx 1730s) who was very much Kawhia Moana and it is
where the hapu Ngati Pareue is known to have originated. There is more, the other names
are in the w'papa of Tainui /N. Mahuta. KIA ORA

married Dick Albert and of what I can remember another lady with 18 children from out
Kakanui. She is still alive. Hariata also had a son named Uncle Bill, He lives in
Wellsford. I don't really know that side very well. As I was brought up in Wellsford then
moved to Auckland when I was 5 years old.

I went to Gisborne Boys High in the early 80's with a Randell Collier and his older brother
was called Kevin. They lived at Makaraka, and from what I can remember both were quite good
boxers.Unfortunately I only get back to Gisborne periodically, but I will make some
enquiries through friends and whanau when I go back this Easter

I am searching for any information on my grandmother from my fathers side. Her name was
Turahira Hunia, I have been told she was from somewhere along the Whanganui river. I know
nothing of her life, hapu, iwi or whakapapa but she married my grandfather Lucky Peniamine
Kaukau of Otane. They had 6 sons and 1 daughter and raised their family predominantly
within the Hawkes bay area. I understand that she may have belonged to Matahiwi marae
(Wanganui river)? and she died around the late 60's or early 70's. I know this is a long
shot but miracles do happen.

There is a Matahiwi marae in Hastings, on the way to Haumoana.
