Hi. A couple of branches of the Kaiwai family left the East Coast in the early / mid 1960's. I was in one of those veins - as far as I know, I was the last one of that line that was born in Tolaga Bay hospital (that moved away in 1964) - my grandfather's name was Eruera Kaiwai and my grandmother's name was Neta (Walker) Kaiwai. Their eldest son, Eruera, and his wife Elaine, still live in Ruatoria. Their children were born on the Coast as well - Nita, Dean and Tracy. My grandparents other children after Eru, were; Cynthia, Judy, Hori (deceased), Kaye (my mum)[in their 60s at time of writing], Ken, Barry, Wayne, Patricia, Winifred (deceased), Lynette, Warren and Oriana (now changed to Breanna). I only have memory of my nanny's mother (hence Nanny Ma Ma) - her name was Harata (Gillman) Walker. My memories are of a elderly woman with my nanny's eyes, that played the harmonica with the experience of an orchestrator, to her late husband that she spoke to as she lay down to sleep every night that she lived with us. I have no memory of any Kaiwai-related Elders beyond that, barring my own uncles and aunties. I have lived in Melbourne since 1979. When I went back to Wainuiomata (outside of Wellington), where most of my family still live, I visited the Taita Lawn Cemetery. I came across the headstone of a Kaiwai that I did not know. He was a teenage Robert Kaiwai. My mum said that they were Kaiwais from Wellington City. As Maori have a tedency to name from descendants, I wonder if this could be the branch you are looking for? Beyond that, I am so detached from Maoritanga that I consider myself a Maori only by looks. I hope this has been a help.

Kia ora Kiri - Shona
Hum.... looks like whanau have lost each other - Kiri your father was Kingi - who is a brother to my mother (second family) - Your family was also known to us as Wi - he along with his family (grandfather Nehe (Ned) Kaiwai and his wife aunty Puna (nee Paenga - a 2nd cousin to Nehe - as her mother was a 1st cousin to Timoti Kaiwai - Shona and your father Wi/Kingi and my mother Kiri (Opie)'s grandfather. These things happen - they have lovely children.
Meffan/Jimmy (Itsy was named for him) - Agnes - Kingi - Cairo - Tamati - John and Katarina.
Shebo is your grandfathers younger brother - your father and Shona are first cousin's.
You do have another cousin with the name Kiri - her mother is Agnes (mentioned above) so don't worry it is a very popular name among the whanau.
Should you require further info on the Kaiwai whanau keep me posted I shall assist as much as I can.
I am the eldest of the 3rd generation of Kaiwai's i.e. Nehe and his whanau - he was the eldest my mother the eldest of the first cousin (her sister's having pre-deceased her) and I was/am the eldest of the next crowd - hum.... time really flies.
In that vain enjoy life to the hilt.
Oh by the way - should any KAIWAI whanau wish to attend a Whanau hui Christmas time - Hone (John) Kaiwai (father Nehe Kaiwai) will be hosting one in his huge place 38kms out of Gisborne - from there we will proceed to my mother's (Kiri Kaiwai's) unveiling in Ruatora (2nd January 2008) - Mangahane (Kaiwai's main marae) 3rd January 2008 - Pa wars will be held and all KAIWAI are invited to take part - whoopee outdoor bowls - line dancing - singing - tug of war - etc...

My grand father was called Peta or Pita Kaiwai and he married Hera Tahata. My dad Eruera(ghost)was the youngest born I think 1906 or aunty polly I am not sure. All I know is that Peta and Hera had a lot of children and by the time I came along 1961 most of his sibling had died in the last century, I remember dad used to get visited by his nephews Ned and Koro Kaiwai they were treasured times for him and mum. If any Kaiwai's out there have any pictures of these early generation of whanau it would be wonderful to see. Cheers

My birth father is George (Hori), however I was raised by my Mum Jayne. I really don't know the Kaiwai side very well as I only made contact about 9 years ago and catch up perhaps a couple of times a year. I am currently trying to do my whakapapa, which is proving to be difficult sometimes, so any information you think might be of help would be greatly appreciated.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Kia ora, I am sorry you feel as you do. I have been lost all my life and a year ago decided to research my whakapapa. I didn't have many names and I was lucky to know my grandparents names but apart from that all I had to go on was old letters from relatives and the internet. It sounds like you might be looking at Tuhourangi, one of the 3 main tribes that descend from the Te Arawa canoe. I am only now researching this area as I have found that my great grandfather has links here. If I happen to find anything pertaining to your query I will let you know. I know I have seen the name Rehe somewhere. So be strong all will come to you in time as it has me concerning whakapapa although I still have a long way to go I have also traveled far, regards, Anita.

Hi Tilly,
Just spending a lazy Sunday afternoon surfin the net about whanau.I started on the Mormon website & after a few diversions ended up on the whakapapa site. Nanny Nga is my great grand mother. Her first husband was a Wharekura, their oldest son was Taraiwa he married a lady called Tori- one of Sarah Jane Marshall's daughters. One of their children included Matehaere-my mother. The oldest was Heeni who married Jack Nikau. Then there was Tumai, Torehina.Nanny Nga then proceeded with relationships with the
Wilson brothers I think there were a few. The names of those offspring were -Kiwa, Te kore,Te Hano Pangu. I may have misse one or two out. Then came the Tumai family. I love the history created by that fine old lady. She outlived most of her grand-children. Would love to fill you in with a few anecdotes about her lift.
The families who lived closest to her were my cousins the Nikau family and the families of Te Hano and Pangu. Please don't hesitate to email me.
Would love to hear from you.

Tena koe,
We spoke with Matt's whaia & she told us that all she can remember was Matt's grandfather's name is Rubin (or Rueban) Wilson, he had a brother "Banger" (not sure if this was his real name) & married to Ruth (dec.) & a sister though doesnt remember her name (could be Mary) and that Rubin's brother & sister lived in Huntly. Rubin had married twice, 2x tamariki she can remember mentioned (Mathew or Macky & Bubby brother & sister) from the 1st marriage, Matt's matua Barney came from Rubin's 2nd marriage to Janet Hireme. The last time Matt's whaia saw "Banger" was @ granny Nga's tangi.
She did share some other korero she remembered Barney telling her about a coalmine that belonged to the Wilson whanau & it being sold but thats about all.
I hope this is a little more helpful.

Thank you for your response! Yes I am aware of the Tamihere whanau, they are cousin's of my mother, and yes Ihaka is my greatgreat grandfather and Makere Takawhenua gg-grandmother according my great grandfather Ngaro Hauraki's death cert but the spelling is Ingakore (possible typo), he was originally from Tuparoa, and resided at the Tuparoa Hotel where he cared for the owners of the hotel until the passed away. Makere Takawhenua from Ruatoria, Hakopa te Ngaro was an alias of my great grandfather Ngaro according to land minutes...all so confusing???

I know of a Hakopa Ingoakore of Haratuanga (Kennedy Bay, Hauraki). he was of Ng Porou descent and his descendants were the Tamihere whanau (of the John tamihere fame) and Kopua whanau. If you want further information it may pay to contact the hauraki Maori Trust board (Telecom White pages) and ask them to either put you in contat with a Tamihere whanau or someone from the Ng Porou ki hauraki people for assistance.

Two years since your message posted...!
I have been slowly working on Te Waru Tamatea through connection to Heni Tama, his granddaughter, who is tipuna to the Tumanako family (Tumanko Monumonu of Tawhana marae married to Titia Arama who moved to Roimata to marry Te An(g)i. Mother of Tangi te One Whero and Te Atamira opf Kutarere. Te Ua Tumanako returned to Te Reinga, and Nehe Kennedy died only recently. Hone Tumanako married Mate Taunoa of Gisborne. Hone was brought up by Heni.
The Scotty Tamatea family of Te Waituhi, Patutahi, Gisborne are related through their nanny being the sister of Te Waru's wife. Would be interested in talking to you further as there are some of us associated with Ngapotiki of te Waituhi who are keen to document Te Waru on account of the close assocaition of the two Tamatea families through both Hauhau and the Te Kooti conenction. Horomona Tutaki, the Tamatea tipuna of Taureka pa, Te Waituhi, Gisborne was chief of The Turanga Hauhau and sent along with two sons, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren to Wharekauri.
I have maps of the lands awarded in the Waiotahe valley and also closer to Opotiki.
Sincerely

I have not been aware of the possibility of any Maori background in our family until I googled the name Rewi and only Maori websites came up. Any help appreciated.

It was fashionable in those days to give Pakeha children Maori names, I've discovered this while reading other family histories, so there may not necessarily be Maori blood there!

I don't know if this is of any help, but a few years ago I came across some research material in the Hamilton library. It was one of many magazines that circulated throughout the late 1800's early 1900's. The magazine was called 'Te Ao Hou' and it featured events and people of that time, as well as many obituaries. I browsed through a few magazines looking for my own personal info, and I saw a photograph of a woman who at the time belonged to the Te Atatu branch of the Womens Welfare League. Her name was Meteria / Metiria ? Waiti. The photo was taken around 1950-60? and she looked to be in her late 30s early 40's. She was being presented with an award for her personal achievements within the organisation. I hope that this info may be of help to you and good luck with your research

I think they were from Te Kaharoa marae, Waitetuna (Ngati Mahanga hapu)midway between Raglan and Hamilton.
The Pumipi you are referring to was of Waipapa marae, Kawhia (Ngati Hikairo) and Tiatia was his wife, who was of Ngati Mahanga and from that marae. They must have been alive around the late 1800s to the early part of 1900. They left many children, of which Te Orahi Darcy and Wiro (both males)were two of the last uri I was told. Rangiunuhia would have to be the men's older sister. Darcy died many years ago (1980s or thereabouts) and would have been in his late 60s or early 70s then. Wiro died before his brother.
Sorry if this info is scant.

I will try and get more info when I see certain people at the next poukai or tangi, as I have an interest in that I am the son-in-law of Darcy Tonga and his wife Raiha Pihama, of Whatawhata. Anna and I have 6 children of which our eldest is 40years old this year.Anna (my children's mother) died in 1981 but the links remain strong with my in-laws (Darcy's childen) of which there are now 5 left out of 8.
Darcy grew up in Ngati Mahanga country but I know little else. I will keep you posted.

If you haven't found anything yet, try posting again with Gate Pa entered in as well. Have you tried searching the web by just entering "Taratoa"? Or try , sometimes you can get results from there. Otherwise, you may need to read books about the history of that area, or try their local museum, they may have contacts who are knowledgable on local whakapapa. Try too.Good luck! Averyl.

Trying to find the names of my tipuna. My great grandmother was Hinewai Williams who Married Charles Treanor in 1903. I am trying to follow her line but am not finding much luck as I have no Surnames. All I know is her mother was Miriama/Hinewai who was a daughter of a rangatira of Tuwharetoa (so I was told) she married a man named Uenuku who was then given the last name Tuwharetoa because of the status of Miriama/Hinewai. I do not know how the name Williams came to be or anything else for that matter.
If anyone can help or give a any kind of direction - it would be much appreciated.

I remember your grandmother and your Aunty Karen - Rosemary's eldest daughter. I haven't seen them in years but had heard about your mother. I hope you locate her but if you haven't already visited Whanarua Bay I suggest you do so it's stunningly beautiful & was once owned by Uncle Romio until he died in the early 70's.

I am currently registering with Ngapuhi and am researching my whakapapa. I have a copy of a marriage register for the marriage of my great, great grandparents on August 7 1863 at the Pupuke, Whangaroa. The bride is "Harriet Tarahau, daughter of Hongi" marrying Owen Davis. No ages are given, it just says they are of "full" age. Harriet is described as a "Chief's daughter". The witnesses are Hare Hongi Hika and Miremu te Tuawu.
What I want to know is whether this is indeed a daughter of Hongi Hika, and whether it is the Harriet that was earlier married to Hone Heke. There was at least one child from the marriage, an Eliza Davis, born in 1865.

Kia ora all,
My Hubby and Daughter are descendants from Elizabeth Leaf/Leef/Leith daughter of John Henry Leaf/Leef & Te Rangahua or Rangihau Te Rewhare (depending on which F.T. site you read) born 1st June 1834/35 In Whirinaki Rawene NZ.
I have partially research the family tree, but would like to find out more, however being in Aust. isn't helping my research.
I have registered them with Nga Puhi, however we have been asked exactly which Iwi the Whanau are originally from, which we don't really know as its been a hush hush thing in past generations.
Is there a book or website I can go to to help with my research? We would like to find out more info, just for family research interests....
Thankyou.
Sally

Kia ora Michael,
Yes! I sighted that marriage register you referred to in a book that I think was called: Hollow Estate To Hokianga [about the Hawkin family ancestors]. I have a whakapapa showing a Harata whom is a daughter of Hare Hongi and one of three wives he had issue with. Rewharewha, Toetoe, and Rongokahira show up as being siblings to Harata, but no issue from Harata. This might be an incomplete whakapapa which I sourced from a Maori Land Court hearing held on 7 Sept. 1929. This may need more investigation. I hope this helps.
Heoi mai
na Hohaia.

Thanks for the information. Hare Hongi Hika is listed on the certificate as one of the wedding witnesses. Am I understanding you correctly that Harata was his daughter (not his wife)? And there were two Hare Hongi Hika's. The first, the son of Hongi, was killed in 1825; the second appears as an appointed official in the 1860's. Do you have the whakapapa of the second Hare Hongi? The issue from Harata was Eliza Davis, born 1865.

Hi Michael,
On a Register of Chiefs [circa 1865, MA 23/25] shows Hare Hongi of belonging to the Te Tahawai hapu of Nga Puhi; aged 60 and his abode as recorded as Pupuke. It appears that no doubt there were two Hare Hongi's. On a presumption, any issue of Hare Hongi born after 1825-1826 would be issue to the second Hare Hongi. Confirmation of the D.O.B of Hare Hongi's issue born after 1825, would make the second Hare Hongi the father [tupuna].
My ancestor was an older brother of Hongi Hika who fell at Te Kai-a-te-karoro in 1807.
I wish you luck on your search.
Regards,
Hohaia.

Hi Hohaia
Thanks for your help. What is the best way to trace back Hare Hongi's ancestry? You mention a Register of Chiefs. What are the best other sources? Can any of them be obtained or viewed somewhere?
Bst regards
Michael

Hello Michael
I am related to Owen Davis who married Hariata (Harriet) Tarahau Hongi. Their grandaughter Emily Britannia (Britty) Downes married Stanier Shepherd Hawkins. Are you related to this family.
Hariata Tarahau Hongi was (I think) one of three daughters of Hare Hongi II and Te Para Te Kura. May also have been a son ToeToe - although not really sure on that.
Cheers
Helen

I appreciate your immediate response Hohaia to my request. I have sourced a number of places but few have given me any definitive answers. I am hoping you will be able to fill in the blanks. My hope is to get back to Pupuke over the Christmas holidays, but my assignment can’t wait that long (chuckle!).
You said you had all the relevant information re: Te WhÄnau Taniora o Pupuke. I am able to accept most documentation via email. If there is a special program required, please let me know.
My apologies for the short note. I have several things to complete tonight so as to keep on top of the workload (student and working). Once again, thank you for your immediate response and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

The Reuben or Rupena Whanau are originally from the Waimamaku area up the top of the North Island.
The town lies just outside of the Waipoua Forest.
I do not know the Tipuna names that you sent through because like you I am also trying to find Whakapapa that is relevant to my husband.
Please stay in touch, for what ever information I can come up with I will share that with you.
With you having connections to Rupena is too incidental and I feel that there must be a very close connection somewhere along the lines.

Kia ora Otillia
I have been trying for ages to make contact with you. First things first your cousin Manny is well and so are all the rest of your cousins. I havent been able to contact Narda and Alice too. Seems as if all the Reubens have gone to live on the moon. Im aware of you reaching higher levels in your Reo and congrats to you for that Tilly. My mindset for a while now was to gather email addresses etc so as to make it easy for us to keep in touch. Most homes have internet rather than land-line phones. I have posted comments onto the Waimamaku Marae website but no Reubens have joined. Plz get in touch with me Tilly and we can surely catch up on all the new issues of our big whanau.
No reira he tino koa katoa tooku ngakau ki te whiriwhiri wetahi paku whakaaro ki runga i tenei emeera. Nga mihi nui ano tenei kia koe Simon mo to kitenga i tooku hiahia ki tou Maama.
