I am trying to trace back to my whakapapa. The information I have is quite
vauge. I was wondering if anyone could tell me information of the lady above,
so far I have that she was an Ariki Chieftainess of Ngati Pakau - Ngati
Kapuna related to sub trives of Ngapuhinui. Hauauru was married to Thomas
John Birch. Sarah, her daughter was born on 25 December 1844 at Taheke and
had four brothers Abraham, Thomas, William and Walter and were direct
descendants of Kupe. Sarah was only three years old when her mother died
and was brought up by an aunt, Ani Patene who was a half sister to her mother
Hauauru. Sarah married Charles Williams. The family had a reunion up in
Waitangi in 1993. I would dearly love to learn about my family heritage so if
you know of anything please email me.

Kia Ora,
Thank you for providing this space for inquires.
Since my father,Brian Franis Murphy died,3 Aug 1993,I have came to relize
that I am quite possibly Maori.
I have asked my uncle,Bill Murphy(whom is into our family tree and records)
for information as to which tribe I may desend from, yet he has not been
forthcoming with any info, except that from our pakiha side.(I have asked
everyone, some deny it,some say they don't know or don't care to)
There has been much predgudice with in our family, lots of well kept secrets.
I am proud of who I am,have become, yet I feel a little lost, (unwhole) not
knowing or being told of my Maori whakapapa.I don't know how I can find this
out on my own!
Could you please advise me on ways I could find this out?
I could be Kai Tahu, as my family lived for a long time on the west coast
of the south Island,greymouth,hokitika,punakaiki.
I am learning my Te Reo,weaving and I assist my partner,(Ta Moko artist)Ben
Te Hau Mcdonald, with his mahi. It's truely great to be connecting and sharing
with that part of myself that I've always felt connected to, yet, it would
be so great to fully know my own whakapapa and be a better part of it.
Thank you for taking the time to read my email
Any advise from you would be greatfully recieved.

Try to take your genealogy as far back as you can and see if you can trace
any of the spouses who have so far, not had their genealogy reasearched yet.
Thankfully, because you are in the Otago area, it should be easier to look
for the european members of your family, then you can trace maori members
through the minute books as long as you are aware of their maori names (or
aliases).

My grandfather was the youngest of 4 brothers I think, his mother was Piari
Howes/Hau she was 1/2
scottish I believe she was from the Ngawha area and believe she is buried at
ngawha by the church.
My grandfather brothers were Kahi Muunu/Moon, they had the same mothers
different fathers there was also an eldest brother and am at a blank to what
his name was.The other brother his name was Tohu he died in Masterton and is
buried here he died after the 2nd world war.
Hone Kingi took his father' first name for a surname thus we became Peneha,
Hone married Marareira Whatarau from Akerama Ngati Hau, 40km's north of

My name is Isobel Wikitera, I am a descendant of Christopher Harris from
Motokaraka in the north. I am unsure as to weather the book you are referring
to is the Harris Whanau book, but I would be interested in finding out. My
mother was Maria Harris, her mother was Maki Harris who was the daughter of
Pere Harris. Pere's father was Nui who was the 7th son of Christopher and Nga
 Huia.

If memory serves correct, my mother told me before she passed that their
were no more copies of the book available, but they were hoping to have a
re-print. This would not be done until there were enough people interested to
permit them to do so as it is an expensive exercise. Kia ora also to Yvonne and
thank you for the info about contacting the marae for this information and book
purchasing details. I am hoping to obtain a copy for my child, so he too will

Tena Koe
The Pomana Whanau are from Matangirau, Whangaroa - Northland as the last
postee said. I was saddened too myself to hear about Uncle Leo's passing
also. I last saw Uncle Leo at my mum's tangi back in 2001. I was last at
Matangirau just last Saturday for my late mum's unvieling of her kohatu
(headstone)..... and it was great to catch up with the whanau. My late
mother's maiden name was "Te Awa" and her mother was a "Tupe". You should
go and visit Matangirau for the Pomana Whakapapa and catch up with the
rellies. I don't get back myself as often as I should, but my tupuna-matua
are from there.

Good Luck!

I don't know if this will be of any use. But if her maiden name was Pene
she could be related to Ngakuru Pene Hare. He was a tohunga who lived in
the area of Kaihu and Waimamaku. His descendants took the name Pene or
more commonly Penney. The whanau spread and there is a strong connection
of that whanau with Mitimiti. My whanau hail from Mitimiti and are closely
related to the Pene whanau there.
Your posting nearly threw me off when I saw the name Opotiki. I wondered
at first if this was a request from down the line.
