Tena Koe!

I am trying to find my Whakapapa, and any links to the
  "Hemi" whanau from
  Te Hapua (Far-North).....

my mum's (Ariana Te Awa) grandmother was
Ariana Hemi, and I believe she's laying in one of the urupa there.

Ariana Hemi was the first wife of
  Morehu Ben Tupe from
Matangirau - Whangaroa, and they had 3 children, of which my grandmother,
Hinerakei Tupe was a daughter of Morehu and Ariana.

Any information and back-ground on the "Hemi" whanau from Te Hapua, would be much
appreciated by my whanau.

My 3 Tupuna: TE WHARERAHI, REWA & MOKA.
Posted by H J HAKARAIA joseph.hakaraia @ xtra. co. nz
September 25, 2001, 10:23 pm

Kia ora koe,
I am a descendant of three brothers..... who were Rangatira-Tupuna (Chiefs) of the Bay of Islands prior to, and up to the signing of the "Tiriti O Waitangi" in 1840.

TE WHARERAHI (Wharenui): My Great-Great-Great-Grandfather.
REWA: My Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandfather.
MOKA (Kainga-Maata): My Great-Great-Great-Grandfather.

Notably, they were also signatories on the "Tiriti O Waitangi" document, signing on behalf of their respective Iwi.
I would be very interested to correspond with anyone that may also descend from each of these three brothers, as I think it is a rare occurrence for most whanau, and a blessing for my whanau, "HAKARAIA" of Te Rawhiti in the Bay of Islands, to descend from three brothers.
Our family "Whakapapa" is evidence enough, to show a direct-lineage from Te Wharerahi, Rewa and Moka, to my Late Grand-Parents...... and I am in the process of writing a book on my family-history, and they will be the basis of my book.
I welcome any information, comments, advice that may help me, my whanau, and anyone else that may also take an interest in these three brothers.
At this time, I thankyou for taking the time to read this...... GOD BLESS!

Heoi ano mo tenei wa!

REWA, (or MAANU) 1780 - 1862.
Posted by Hohaia
October 12, 2001, 9:28 am

REWA, (or MAANU) 1780 - 1862
REWA, a leading chief of Ngapuhi in the early nineteenth century, was one of three
brother chiefs of the hapu, Ngai Tawake. In 1807, his father, TE MAOI and two
brothers were killed at Moremonui. Thereafter Rewa distinguished himself on many
campaigns, becoming one of Hongi Hika's leading generals and after the death of
Hongi (1828) and Pomare, the greatest Ngapuhi commanded. In Tuwhare's expedition
to Taranaki (1819-1820) Rewa shot the Taranaki chief, Mokowera at Orangituapeka Pa.
In 1820, Rewa and his brother, Moka, followed Tareha on the Kaipara expedition. The
following year, the three brothers, Te Wharerahi, Rewa and Moka played their part in
the deception which brought about the fall of Te Totara. In 1822, Rewa was at
Matakitaki (Waikato) with Hongi and Moka. He sincerely desired peace with Waikato,
and in 1824, his daughter, Matire Toha, was given in marriage to Kati to cement the
peace. In that year also, he accompanied Pomare to the East Coast seeking a peace
with Ngati Porou.

In 1825, Te Wharerahi, Rewa and Moka were at Te Ika-a-Ranginui, where Moka was
severely wounded and saved with great gallantry by Taiwhanga. In 1828, through
the intervention of the missionaries, Rewa made peace with the Hokianga tribes.
In 1829, Samuel Marsden met Rewa again and was much impressed by his generous
character, outstanding intelligence and disposition to stop tribal warfare.
Marsden's arguments towards a Maori sovereignty were sympathetically discussed, but
Rewa could see no hope of its acceptance owing to the jealousy of the chiefs. He
appreciated the benefits arising from the presence of the missionary stations,
protected the Rev. J Butler at Kerikeri, and insisted on taking missionaries south
to occupy the lands conquered in 1823. Marsden held Rewa in high respect and had
great influence over him, but could not prevent him from making a human sacrifice
on the death of his second wife. Though involved in the girl's war of 1830, by the
fact that one of the girls was a close relative, he maintained a position almost of
neutrality and seconded Marsden's efforts for a settlement. Rewa and his older
brother, Te Wharerahi, signed the petition asking King William for protection in
1831. Now a good Christian, he assisted the Rev. Henry Williams in converting
others and strove energetically to inaugurate a regime of law and order.

Henry Williams, however, reposed greater faith in Rewa's older brother, TE
WHARERAHI, whom he baptized as Hori Kingi. Te Wharerahi also strove for peace and
protected the missions after the burning of Kororareka (Russell) in 1845. A
venerable, dignified figure, Te Wharerahi was in 1828 already old and decrepit, but
he lived to co-operate in bringing about peace with Waikato in 1835.

The third and the youngest brother, MOKA (who took the name of Te Kaingamaata) was
less well disposed to the pakeha. Henry Williams found him self-willed, quarrelsome,
daring, impatient and without one good quality. Before 1840, the three brothers had
drawn away from the influence of the missionaries and were somewhat hostile to the
acceptance of the "Te Riti O Waitangi." Their loyalty however, was unquestioned and
Rewa aided the military against Hone Heke Pokai, in 1845 with both arms and advice.

REWA, the second son of Te Maoi and Te Auparo, died in August, 1862.

E Tupuna Rewa Rangatira!

Ko Ngatiwai i timata mai i a Ngati Manaia.
I haeremai mai i runga i a Mahuhu-Ki-Te-Rangi. Ko nga mana katoa o Ngatiwai kei
te wai, i nga taniwha me o ratou manawa. Kei Motukokako, kei reira tetahi wahi

kei mate."
