My sweet grandparents

I lived with my grandparents (which are my mother's parents), since I was born. Sometimes my parents had a lot of work, but my grandparents were always there helping us. I owe them very much.

Avram Augustin

He was born on October 20, 1923, in Paucisoara, located in Mures, Romania. Living on the country side, work was the main part in his life. He had to work all the time with his family. In his village there was one school from first to 8th grade. He had many brohers and sisters. We still have the house he lived in. It was very big, but the thing I like most about it, is that it had a very big yard, all green, with grass, flowers and trees, and also a huge garden. It was wonderfull.

The second main part of his life was in the 1940's --World War II. He had to join the army. It was very scary. The part where it really got scary was in 1944. It was august 23. Until then, Romania was on Germany's side, and some German troops had bases in Romania. But that night, while my grandpa was at his base, the radio announced that Romania changed sides, and now their goal was to defeat German troops in the country. They mobilized the troops, and now my grandfather was walking towards a sure battle. He told me he got hit only once. He saw fellow soldiers die in front of his eyes. He fell once in Mures, a big river. Then, they had to go and free Czechoslovakia. It is close, but not our neighboor. So my grandfather, along with many other soldiers walked until the Tatra mountains, in Czechoslovakia. After many battles, almost no food, they freed that country and came back. Everybody was very happy and proud of the romanian soldiers, just like I am now.

My grandpa was in pretty good shape. Unfortunately, he passed away in June 1999 and I went there last summer. I feel very sad and incredebly sorry that such a great man left and now my grandmother is suffering because of his death.

Minerva Avram

My grandmother was born in 1929 in SubPadure, a small village in Mures, Romania. She had many brothers and sisters (they were 5 in total), and had work all the time. She only finished 7th grade, not going further, because it was difficult for a village girl. World War II was a rough time for her, too. The Nazis destroyed their garden and all the crops. Some germans one day came to her house and told my grandmother and her mother, Lucretia, to give them food and wine. They had to obey. It was the only time that they came so close to the Nazis.

After WWII was over, and our soldiers were coming in the middle of the streets with people throwing flowers at them, Minerva met my grandfather, and they fell in love. They lived in Paucisoara, where my grandpa lived before. It was pleasant, but sometimes, even though it was very rare, a wild boar would come in the corn fields, or even a wolf. Times were rough back then, but they managed to lead a very hapy life. I'm proud of them. I love them.
