ROSS, Wayne Gibson at gibson@mindspring.com is writing a book and needs some documented proof. His ancestor John Adair Bell wrote in 1846." The family of this John Ross and the dignified chief justice, who verifies the affidavit, had made very fair progress in "stealing" before leaving Georgia, as the records of the superior Court of Cass County (illegible phrase) in the removal of their party." The removal, of course, refers to the Cherokee exodus. The Ross emigrants left in October 1838 Ross departed on the SB "Victoria" in December 1838 (he had it pretty soft in those staterooms). The reference to Ross' family is probably to his brother, Lewis Ross. The Chief Justice refers to George Hicks. Unfortunately the attack on my great-great grand father was printed in the congressional record, but his reply, as far as I know, exists only on microfilm. His rebuttal to Ross' slander was written in 1846 after his return from Washington. As a member of the Treaty Party he signed the treaty of 1846 as well as the treaty of New Echota in 1835. If the superior Court records exist for the Cherokee removal era and there is any way to extract and substantiate my ancestor's reference to "stealing," involving a Ross or Hicks, my book's content will be greatly enhanced. Wilson Lumpkin would be happy as well, may he rest in peace. Wayne also sends a telephone # 714-637-0465
