On April 24th, My wife, the baby and
I left home about 3:30 AM and headed to San Antonio, Texas. Our route of travel was
basically I-64 west, I-81 south, I-40 west, I-30 west, and I-35 south. Tom Bodett left the
light on for us at Motel 6 in Texarkana and we arrived in San Antonio about 3 PM CDT an
April 25th. We had some slow going most of that day (Friday)because of heavy rain.
Everyone was happy to see us, even Dusty's daughter, Daisy. The weather was cloudy, cool,
and rainy until Sunday when it cleared and we got some great Texas weather; sunny and hot.
While we were there, we mostly just relaxed. My wife played some bingo and did some
shopping and I just tryed to be as lazy as possible. We had planned to leave in the early
morning hours of Thursday, May 1st but decided late Wed. to go ahead and head for home. We
left San Antonio around 6:30 PM and headed out I-10 east toward Houston. We were just west
of Beaumont, TX around 10 pm when my wife heard the winning "Pick 3" numbers for
the Texas lottery and screamed "I won! I won!" It's a good thing Tom left the
light on for us at Motel 6 again. We spent the night at Orange, Texas (about 2 miles from
Louisanna) and the next morning, she got her prize money and we headed on home. Our route
was basically I-10 east, I-59 north, I-40 east, I-81 north, and I-64 east. I came back a
different route because of the horrible road conditions in Arkansas.

I have just two comments or tips for you following this trip. Don't go through Arkansas. The roads are terrible. I was only on I-40 from Memphis to Little Rock and then I-30 from Little Rock to Texarkana. I hit more bone jarring bumps in one mile of Arkansas interstate than on 500 miles of primary roads in Virginia. The other is try to avoid Houston, Texas and Birmingham, Alabama. The drivers are the most aggressive and dangerous I have encountered since I was last in Washington, DC.
