Vacation 98 began in Virginia at midnight on July 17 and ended around 9:30 AM on July 30th. It covered 13 states and 5100 miles (8415 KM). Our stops included overnight in Oklahoma City, OK; 4 days and nights in Las Vegas, NV; 2 days and nights in San Diego, CA; overnight in El Paso, TX; 5 days in San Antonio, TX; and an overnight in Knoxville, TN.
The driving part of the trip was fairly uneventful. We passed only 3 accidents, 2 of which were of a very serious nature. The weather was fantastic. There were some monsoonal thunderstorms in western Arizona with some vicious crosswinds but at least it was cool.
The heat in Las Vegas was indescribable. 114 degrees and 15% humidity and that was in the shade. Some thunderstorms moved in on Sunday night which brought the temp. down about 10 degrees. I must say that Las Vegas has changed a lot in the last 10 years. It is much more congested on the strip (both traffic wise and building wise). Fremont Street is now a covered mall and is a great improvement.
Then on to California and I must say I was not impressed. I guess I just had my hopes too high from all the bragging I had heard. Unless you know your way around when you get off the freeways, you will be lost in a heartbeat. Very wierd street layouts.
Then on to San Antonio to spend some time with my son. Had a great visit there before heading home across Louisanna, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and finally Virginia.
I came home with about 70 or 80 pictures of the trip and have picked out 16 for your viewing pleasure. Just click on the thumbnail for the full sized image. Use the back button on your browser to return to this page.
