Notes for Gabriel C. FOSTER
Family story from the notes of Mary Sue Thorne---daughter of Annie Foster
Thorne--grandaughter of Gabriel:
...Lee married Annie Caldwell Foster.
Annie was 18, the daughter of Gabriel and Susan WIngo Foster. The
Fosters and Wingos were prominent in Spartanburg County. Gabriel had
five brothers killed in the CIvil War. Gabriel, himself, attempted to go
to war. He picked up his hunting rifle and walked 5 miles to Spartanburg
to try to enlist in the Confederate Army. The recruiting officer asked
his age, he said, "I'm 15 years old." The officer said, "You go back
home, son, and help grow a garden."
One brother of Gabriel was first man in medical history to have a bullet
removed from his brain. He lived to recover and go back into the war.
He was killed by amini ball going into his heart.
Rev. Landrum writes this a little differently. He says that Joseph had
the mini ball go through his head and exit just below the ear. He says
that Joseph was killed in Virginia at Blackwater by being cut in two by a
cannon ball.
