OUR FAMILY PETS

PETS
!

Sulitan Charlie Hustle is a 12 (supposed to be 7) pound Yorkshire Terrier that was named for Mawmaw Charlie by CJ. Needless to say he is a real tornado around the house. His toys abound everywhere. And yes, he certainly has his favorite toys.

Good little Charlie, while he is as fast as lightening, he is of absolutely no use when it comes to protecting us from strangers. To him, all people and all things are his personal toys. Joy, joy, joy! Everyone who comes in the door is fair game for him! He is quite indignant when he isn't the center of ALL their attention. Such a cute fellow, he is the love of everyone who comes.

Charlie runs every chance he gets past the outside door to joys yet unfound ... His current place of abode is on top of the bar along the side of the front hallway. He jumps on the back of the couch to perch there. From that vantage point he lays for hours watching the outdoors and the traffic along the nearby boulevard.

He runs back and forth between rooms and windows to see what is happening (He is the nosiest of any neighbor!) and then zips out his own little door into his personel little yard to bark vigorouly at everything. He used to mimic Elsie's bark sometimes.

Charlie has a friend living with him. Oreo, a black and white papillon, has come to live with us. He is ten years old - only five when he came to live here. He needed a new home and won our hearts in only a few weeks' time. Yes, Charlie has been jealous, but seems to enjoy having the company of another canine hanging out with him. They even sleep side and side at night. The biggest problem? They both want the very same toy or bone all the time!

Elsie (after Mawmaw Charlie's given name!) lived outdoors and thought she was our protector. She was a black and white Hunting dog breed born with one hip and leg a different size from the rest of herbody. She was our quiet one. Always shy and timid of strangers. Always on the run and busy. Yet, she was the one that protected us all at home. The quiet and timid disposition disappeared when she thought any of us need to be alerted to strangers, or strange happenings.

Bingo is the Pomeranian that belongs to CJ's family. He is now learning to get along with Charlie, but probably wishes Charlie would just slow down and take life a little easier and quieter!

The two Beagles, Diamond and Ruby, belonged to Joseph and Jon-Isaac. They got to roam the woods around their house and usually came back home all wet after taking a dip in the pond. They by nature ARE good and noisy watchdogs. Along with the dogs, Tina also had a blue/green parakeet named JJ. He mostly whistled, said JJ, and nothing more! I must get busy and record the lives of these three that are no longer with us.

Scott and Judy have the most gentle and loving of all. Duchess is a Chesapeake Retriever. She loves to keep the deer, bears, rabbits, or anything that moves, chased away from home. It's so hard to imagine that someone shot her as a young pup and just narrowly missed her spine. There is nothing aggressive or mean about her. She stays right at home and doesn't roam around. She probably would risk her life for a human being that was in need of help. Recently, a very young Jack Russell Terrier came to live with her. They instantly bonded and became inseparatble. Another whole page could be dedicated to these two friends.

Carol and Paul share their Belgian Malinois,Sega, (I hear that Sega is getting to where she wants more and more of Carol's attention! She thinks she is a lapdog..} and Basenjii,(Strider and Ginger). Sega is winning bunches of blue ribbons. She is working at the AKC excellent level and has titles in NADAC.
Strider just won an Agility Excellent Award. He is only the third Dog of his breed to earn this award. He is competing on AKC level and has agility titles in AKC, UKC and NADAC. He was on Regis and Kathy Lee Morning Show back in the fall. Carol and Paul stay busy year'round working with their dogs. I recently heard that Paul may be winning more blue ribbons with Ginger?
Well ... they also have added two Chinese Crested dogs, Fran and Ernie, and a border collie, Quest, to the family and the world of agility trials.

How could we ever forget Shep? He came to us as a bedraggled, pitiful, shy pup. He was a throughbred German Shepherd through and through, but the runt of the litter. The breeder had given up on him. It took numerous trips to the vet before he started to grow and fill out. We called him Shep because that was all he would come to when called. We tried a lot of different names, but Shep was the winner. He turned out to be a 98 pound beautiful, smart, loving watch dog. When anything was different he had a special bark which the neighbors depended on for signs of a stranger. He died at the age of 12 from Heartworms. The need for heartworm pills was not yet known about here in the South until it was too late for him. He was a beautiful baby and loved playing with Ozzie. They were quite a pair! They would scare Mawmaw to death with their roughhousing, but the two of them were happy as a lark. Ozzie would come prancing back into the house with his head held high and dirty as he could be after a bout with Shep.

As we watch the other dogs play and interact together, and with humans, we keep remembering Ozzie and the way he was. They can be the most gentle, loving and caring of animals. Saga played pull with us recently and she pulled hard, yet when she pulled with Charlie she would allow him to pull and then she would carefully pull him some. Later, as Charlie was playing pull with us he would growl and tug as hard as he could. We would turn and put the tug rope in the baby's hand, he would immediately become very docile allowing the baby to do the pulling.

The Rail
There is another very special breed- the Dalmation- which is the dearest of all to the hearts of my family. I can't begin to tell of the love and devotion we have experienced during the twenty-eight years we owned two of them.

Dunder un Blitzen was lovingly called "Donald" by the children as they grew up. Once he was nursed back to health by them when he had distemper. The Vet was also named Donald and said that was the only dog he knew of that had his name. He was surprised to see that the children had nursed him back to health. We had him for twelve years.

Blitz was a blue-eyed wonder! A real joy ... and a challenge for Mother, I might add...Mother would go out each evening to put her up in the basement because as she got older and her joints got stiffer she started lying down in the middle of the road at night. The warm pavement must have made her feel better. When Mother would go out the door, Blitz would hide along the edge of the yard and peek out from behind the trees to watch. It was a game each time to see how long she could outwit Mother!
She was with us for sixteen years. Years filled with energy and mishaps at times. I would have another Dalmation now if only I had the energy needed to care for it.

Check out the human side of the family. We really have a great love in our individual homes for animals, especially dogs. There have also been mice, hamsters, a preyfish (it was a real pet!), guiney pigs, rabbits, ducks, a pony, goats (never turn your back on one!), and fish ... a black pig named It, and of course, the parakeet, JJ. Probably some I overlooked, as well. There are dogs yet to be told about. Such as Scott's fourteen beagles. His Momma dog had nine pups with the Vet's help ... or the bee hives, feeders for birds (humming birds included) and squirrels ... the list goes on ...
