NUNCHAKU

nunchaku

Considered a weapon of Okinawan origin, the Nunchaku was used by farmers to thresh grain, rice, wheat and other staple foods. It is/was constructed of strong, metal, or more often, wood tied together with a cord or chain. It is held with either hand and swung at a high or low target areas. When lashing out, a figure 8 pattern is used, making it almost impossible for an adversary to catch the striking portion. It also may be thrown, used to deflect objects, and also used for choking, blocking and grabbing.

The Nunchaku can also be used in pairs, although not traditionally used in this manner. It provides an excellent defense against all types of other weapons. At a long distance, it can be accurately thrown with one of more of the tips making contact, and in close quarters situations can be used for short, powerful and lethal strikes.

During the oppression of the Okinawans, it was discovered by the Samurai that the Nunchaku could be rendered useless by cutting through the cord with fastened the two pieces together. To prevent and counter this, the Okinawans' replaced the connecting cord with long strands of human hair that could not be easily cut by the Samurai swordsman. The hair, legend states, was donated by a loved one, thereby adding spiritual essence to the weapon.

The corners of the Nunchaku can be squared off, forming a hexagon or carved with ridges which have the ability to cut flesh. Nails, or other sharp barbs can also be added for the same purpose.

In the Republic of the Philippines, this weapon is called the Chako, and is made from nearly indestructible "teak" or "nara" wood. The cord, is usually shorter than the Okinawan version, allowing for a faster spinning motion. In the Philippines, as in several states within the United States, the weapon is banned and considered a dangerous weapon, making possession unlawful.

Formal excursuses can/are done with the Nunchaku, demonstrating the variety of techniques which may be acquired through diligence and practice in the use of this weapon.
