Grandparents have an important role to fill! Especially today in this society where values are non-existent. Grandparents can play a pivotal role in the lives of their children and their grandchildren. It is their good Christian example above all else which sets the standards for them to follow. The Bible is clear to state what our example should be and what we should teach by this example.
Grandparents cannot in any way take the place of the parents nor should they ever contradict them. The role of the grandparent is to simply confirm and reinforce the Christian values hopefully being taught by the parents. It is the wisdom gained from age that will make the next generation able to lead the following generation. As each generation grows into their own roles as grandparents, may the knowledge and wisdom be shared and passed on to your children and your grandchildren!
Give ear, O my people, to my law;
Incline your ears to the words
of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings of old,
Which we have heard and known,
And our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children,
Telling to the generation to come
the praises of the Lord,
And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.
For He established a testimony
in Jacob,
And appointed a law in Israel,
Which He commanded our
fathers,
That they should make them
known to their children;
That the generation to come might
know them,
The children who would be born,
That they may arise and declare
them to their children,
That they may set their hope in
God,
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments;
Psalm 78:1-7

- Be AVAILABLE to your children, stand by with readiness when the grandchildren are born to share experiences from the past and the extra work necessary to the new parents. DO NOT BE OVERBEARING, hear what the new parents are saying and assist in their goals for their family. Remember to never criticize!
- Take time to read stories especially Bible stories to your grandchildren. Sing to them special Christian songs and tell them your stories of when grandma & grandpa was a little boy and girl.
- Play with your grandchild, building blocks or playing cars, throwing the ball or dolls. How special it is for a grandparent who gets down on the floor to play with the children's toys or out in the back yard playing ball. Give your children the memories!
- Be available to your children (the new parents) to babysit while mom and dad get a break to nurture their own relationship, reflect on their life and their family and marriage goals.
- Take your grandchild for a walk or a hike in the woods, or by a lake or stream to sit and lazily skip stones across the water. Make the time to sit down and tell them your favorite pastimes now and when you were younger. Volunteer to fix the bikes, or mend the teddy bears or bake cookies!
- Be interested in their school projects, athletic games and such. How proud is the grandchild who has a grandparent cheering them on in the stands!!
- Lift your children and grandchildren up to the Lord in intercessory prayer!
- Share with your grandchild(ren) the importance of honesty & truthfulness, forgiveness, being sorry, and patience! By sharing your own experiences with these virtues, you can instill the real value of God's plan for us. When you teach children the fruit of the Spirit...the Christian walk as ordained by the Father, you will in effect teach them the value of loving one another! Teach them how to walk confidently in God's plan including their future relationships with their spouse and their children!
- Share with the grandchildren the story of the creation, all its beauty and how it evolved by our Heavenly Father. Most importantly sharing God's plan of our salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, and the indwelling spirit of His Holy Spirit. Share your experiences of what the Lord has done for Grandma and Grandpa, and the importance of keeping pure and holy!
The Christian's instruction for the "Older Men and Women"
...that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; the older women likewise that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things--
Titus 2:2-3
Blessed are the Grandparents who are good examples of the Christian life, passing down by their own example God's plan as they seek to do the will of the Father!

Life
Let me but live my life from year to year
With forward face and unreluctant soul,
Not hastening to, nor turning from, the goal;
Not mourning for the things that disappear
In the dim past, not holding back in fear
From what the future veils; but with a whole
And happy heart that pays its toll
To Youth and Age, and travels on with cheer:
So let the way wind up the hill or down,
Through rough or smooth, the journey will be joy.
Still seeking what I sought when but a boy
New friendship, high adventure, and a crown,
I shall grow old, but never lose life's zest.
Because the road's last turn will be the best.
