Bible Study #1, Building Your Foundation with Jesus!

About this study:
This foundational Bible study entitled "Jesus Must be our Lord" gives the reader an opportunity to review the basics and get an understanding of the meaning of "Christ First" in our lives. This is the foundation of a healthy marriage, family and life in Christ Jesus. May you find this study to be a blessing in your life.

Jesus Must Be Our Lord

Key Verse: (Romans 10:9) ..that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

"If Jesus Christ be God and died for me,
then no sacrifice is too great for me to give for Him."
C.T. Studd

The Objectives of the Study are:

1. To understand why Jesus is Lord (see Phil. 2:9-11)

2. To establish the Lordship of Jesus in our lives (see Romans 10:9-10)

I   What Does It Mean to see Jesus As Lord?

A. Definition of Lord:

    1. One having power and authority over others.

    2. As creator, and as the Son of God, Jesus is entitled to our service and obedience.

B. When we see Jesus as our Lord, we will be submitting to His authority, no longer to our own.

II   Who Is Jesus?

A. John 3:16 -- "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life."

He is the Son of God.

B. Hebrews 1:8 -- But to the Son He says, "Thy Throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom."

He is God the Son.

    1. The trinity.

    2. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.

    3. One God in three persons.

C. Matthew 1:18,22-23 -- Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel." which is translated, "God with us." (see Isaiah 7:14)

    1. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit.

    2. He was born of a virgin.

    3. Why is this important?.

        a. Jesus had to be born without sin.
He was to be the lamb umblemished and spotless.
(see I Peter 1:19).

        b. The sin nature is passed on by the father.
(see Romans 5:12-16)

        c. If He would have had an earthly father,
He would not have been God the Son.

        d. Jesus could not have paid for man's sins
had He been only a man.
(see Psalm 49:7-8)

D. Hebrews 7:26 -- For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;

He lived a perfect, undefiled life.

E. John 1:29 -- The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"

He is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
(see Exodus 12 - the passover lamb)

F. I Corinthians 15:4 -- ...and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scripture.

He rose from the dead.

G. Mark 16:19 -- So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.

He ascended into heaven.

H. Hebrews 7:25 -- Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

He can completely save us from the consequences of sin by giving us salvation which we can obtain by coming to God in prayer.

I. Revelation 22:12 -- " And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work."

He will return to earth as our judge.

J. Philippians 2:9-11 -- Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

He is our Lord. We can now willingly give Him the worship and obedience His position deserves. A day is coming when that worship and obedience will be demanded.

III   What Has Jesus Done Already?

A. Luke 19:10 -- "...for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."

Jesus came to seek and save the lost.

B. II Corinthians 5:19-21 -- that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Jesus reconciled us to God. He made "atonement".

    1. Definition of atonement - Reconciliation of the guilty by divine sacrifice.

    2. God the Father placed our sin upon Jesus. This has already been done.

    3. God the Father gives us the opportunity, because Jesus bore our sin, to be righteous - to have a right relationship with Him.

C. Isaiah 53:5 -- But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.

1."He was wounded for our transgressions."
He was punished because we violated God's law.

    2. "He was bruised for our iniquities."
He was mistreated because we violated the rights of others.

    3. "The chastisement of our peace was upon Him."
He was tormented so we could have peace.

    3. "By His stripes we are healed."
His flesh was torn so that our flesh could be made whole.

D. I John 3:8 -- He who sins is on the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was minifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

He destroyed the works of the devil.

    1. Destroyed is the Greek word "luo" which means to loose, release, dissolve.

    2. Jesus undid those things that the devil used to bind us up.

    3. Now the devil's schemes are like a person who sows with an empty bobbin. What is put together looks good but it falls apart from the least bit of resistance. (see James 4:7).

IV   THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST MUST BE TOTAL

A. We need to avoid having divided hearts!

    1. Hosea 10:2 -- Their heart is divided; Now they are held guilty. He will break down their altars; He will ruin their sacred pillars..

    2. Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!

Consider this:

Example of a Divided Heart, one who does not have God first in their life!
In this example:
God is a part of this person's life, however,
God is in competition with this person's other interests.
Jesus is NOT in control.

Example of a Whole Heart, one who puts God first!
In this example:
Every area of this person's heart is under the Lordship of Christ.
The will of God is above the person's desires.
Jesus is in control.

B. The benefits of submitting to Jesus' Lordship.

    1. Matthew 6:33 -- "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righeousness, and all these things shall be added to you."
Seek God's will, God will take care of your business!

    2. Philippians 4:19 -- And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

As we read the entire passage (Philippians 4:15-19) we see that our obedience to God's directive to give, results in God taking care of our needs!

The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard you hearts and minds through Christ Jesus!
God bless you richly as you seek to do His will
and receive His Son as Lord in your life!
