Kwahts waves at JerseyL
<Troi-> I think too many graphics on a first page is not good. Especially if they are large.
<JerseyL> I don't know how to wave :(
<Troi-> Takes too long to come up and people get bored waiting. Let them choose to go to your graphics page if they so desire.
<Sweetcake> I also think they can hinder a user if the height and width tags are not use..at least with the height and width tags the rest of the page will load around the graphics.
<Troi-> yes
<Lexa> we can do few graphics and put them on some page, other members can chose them
<Troi-> yes I agree.
<Sweetcake> No graphics or the lack of graphics does not make a page look very good either....somewhere in the middle is what we need.
<JerseyL> Does anyone know how to use Photoshop?
<Troi-> What kind of graphics are Lexa and I supposed to be doing Carol?
<Lexa> then we can put that graphics on our pages
<Sweetcake> The URL jeff sent to resize images works very good..can bring down the file sixe of a lot of graphics and thus a page will load faster..
<Lexa> I do a bit, but i prefer Paint Shop
<Sweetcake> I'll check..
<JerseyL> Why do you prefer Paint Shop--easier??
<Troi-> I have a couple of graphics packages.. Also, at the Tucows site, they have image viewers that you can download for free, and they resize the grapics too
<Sweetcake> Topics to consider/start discussion (don't stop here, these are
<Sweetcake> just a few points you might like to cover!):
<Sweetcake> The use of graphics is, as you will certainly find out, quite
<Sweetcake> subjective. Many people love a page loaded with many colorful
<Sweetcake> pictures, while others surf around with the images function turned
<Sweetcake> off on their browser. Additionally, some surfers have visual
<Sweetcake> limitations that prevent them from enjoying graphics on a web
<Sweetcake> page. How can a web designer possibly please all viewers? Is it
<Sweetcake> really necessary to even try? Can there be too many graphics on a
<Sweetcake> page? Too few?
<Troi-> I just brought home Corel Draw 4 from the office also, Havent had a chance to install yet thougj
<Sweetcake> What do you as individuals prefer? Can you deal with waiting for a
<Sweetcake> long load time if the end result is a treat for the eyes? Or do
<Sweetcake> you prefer streamlined and/or small graphics. How do group members
<Sweetcake> feel?
<Kwahts> I just got off ATT's WorldNet...graphics were proper size
<RiffRaff> I like them slow, and dazzling. :)
<Troi-> I think a few graphics on the home page, then a link on the home page to different kinds of graphics would be good
<Lexa> i don't know really, Linda, with Paint Shop you can also creat great graphics, but i think it's very similar with Photo Shop :)
<Kwahts> But the images was covered with print
<RiffRaff> er FAST and dazzling, I meant.
<Troi-> LOL Paul
Kwahts sets mode: +o Sweetcake
<Lexa> Paul, i think you are good in graphic too :)) ???
<Kwahts> I saw another page where everything was black and you had to "feel" around
<RiffRaff> Paint Shop has always been able to handle all the features and bells and whistles that other more expensive software packages do...
<RiffRaff> Lexa: well, I do my best. :) *hiding his face with his tail*
<Sweetcake> here is the graphics assignment Lexa & Troi
<Sweetcake> CHALLENGE 5:
<Sweetcake> Locate resources regarding the use of colors on the web. While
<Sweetcake> this is not SPECIFIC to graphics it is a consideration you need to
<Sweetcake> be familiar with to use graphics effectively.
<Sweetcake> Have someone research post to the groups demonstration page as
<Sweetcake> brief discussion of:
<Sweetcake> 1. The "Netscape Palette"
<Sweetcake> 2. RGB color values
<Sweetcake> 3. At least one other color related issue on web pages of your
<Sweetcake> choosing
<Sweetcake> CHALLENGE 6: ... THE BIG ONE!!!
<Sweetcake> Assign group members to search for appropriate graphics for your
<Sweetcake> group page. Make sure that the graphics located are not
<Sweetcake> copyrighted or if they are, appropriate permissions or credits are
<Sweetcake> secured.
<Sweetcake> Choose at least six from the selection of graphics below and
<Sweetcake> assign a group member to create an example of that item. The GROUP
<Sweetcake> should use one of each of these "examples" in their demonstration
<Sweetcake> page and give a brief "tutorial" (this can be as little as 50
<Sweetcake> words or something more complex, as your group feels is
<Sweetcake> appropriate.) about or description of how the graphic was created.
<Sweetcake> Additionally each member should attempt to make/create at least
<Sweetcake> one of EACH of the following on their own over the course of the
<Sweetcake> class.
<Sweetcake> 1. Thumbnail graphic
<Sweetcake> 2. Animated Gif
<Sweetcake> 3. Background Image
<Sweetcake> 4. Transparent Gif
<Sweetcake> 5. Bar
<Sweetcake> 6. Button
<Sweetcake> 7. Banner
<Sweetcake> 8. Graphical Text
<Sweetcake> 9. A single pixel transparent gif
<Sweetcake> 10. A tiled background square
<Sweetcake> 11. A border background
<Kwahts> Am I alone in downloading that tremendous color comparisons page?
<Lexa> so, maybe Pattie and I will need some help with assignment :)
<Troi-> I would think we would need a bunch of help.. :) I don't have unlimited free time to work on this.. LOL
<Kwahts> I did a tiled square, today...and used it as a background image.
<JerseyL> I'm confused about where the tutorials are going. Is our "themed page" separate?
<Sweetcake> pretty big assignment..need a few for this one...I think the sound one could be done by one person but this one should be done by at least 3 people I think. And since we are not instructed I think it should be at least 3 people who have at least some slim idea of how to get started.
<Troi-> I have done banners, graphical text, transparent gifs, background image
<RiffRaff> on backgrounds?
<RiffRaff> I've done a lot on BG's too.
<Lexa> me too, Pattie, i have full time job too.....but when i have time i like to learn new things and do new graphics for my page
<Kwahts> Also did a border GIF & used it..
<Kwahts> How do BANNERS work?
<RiffRaff> Banners are done with Java, aren't they? or am I thinking of marquees?
<Sweetcake> I think our individual page is seperate and this assignment is put on our main site
<Troi-> well, I do them with my hot dog pro.. so I cant say I have done them from scratch
<Lexa> so Paul, you can be third one for that assignment if you want
<RiffRaff> Lexa: I want to help out all I can in the graphics and sound dept. :)
<Lexa> yes, carol, I told Pattie before that I made few backgrounds and "Neon titles2 for group already
<Troi-> cool.. should we divy up the work then?
Kwahts nods.
<Sweetcake> maybe make a graphics.html page at our main geocities site and then put the examples and demos on it and link it to the index, html that is there. And it may be easier if your working on banners and buttons and things to design ones that you want to use on your individual page and use them as the example for the homework.
<Kwahts> Anyone want to look at my stuff, it's at http://www.galstar.com/~rhawk & follow the top link.
<Kwahts> Yes!
<Troi-> ok.. I can take Thumbnail, Animated Gif, and Graphical Text.. make them, and then explain how I did them.. ok?
<Kwahts> That sounds great, SC!
<Lexa> i can do different graphics and we can chose which we will use (if any) for our main page
<Lexa> that will be ok with me Pattie
<RiffRaff> I can do animated gifs, backgrounds, borders, anything in sound.
<Troi-> sounds good Paul
<Lexa> Paul....we can try to find some great ideas together....but fast :)))
BAKERO [Asalah@148.234.48.198] has left #web-O-Crats
<Sweetcake> so much stuff to get out of the way..wonder where everyone else is?
<Sweetcake> here is some more of our assignment:
<Sweetcake> CHALLENGE 2:
<Sweetcake> Have members of your group locate at least one page which, in your
<Sweetcake> group's opinion, uses graphics well and at least one page which
<Sweetcake> uses them ineffectively. Describe why you feel this to be the case
<Sweetcake> in each instance. Describe briefly how you believe the page
<Sweetcake> designers could improve the page in the case of the ineffective
<Sweetcake> use of graphics, post it to your demonstration page.
<Sweetcake> No ideas? Take a look at these pages for a start:

<Sweetcake> http://members.aol.com/gerrym22/index.html
<Sweetcake> http://www.sepc.sony.com/SCEA/findex.html
<Sweetcake> CHALLENGE 3:
<Sweetcake> Research the strong points and limitations of the two most common
<Sweetcake> file formats for images on the web: GIF and JPG Have group
<Sweetcake> members write up the results of the research and post to your
<Sweetcake> demonstration page. Also, graphically demonstrate these strengths
<Sweetcake> and weakness in some manner by using them in a web page created
<Sweetcake> for this demonstration.
<Sweetcake> Discuss the pros and con of using OTHER graphical file types on a
<Sweetcake> web page. Decide whether or not the positives might outweigh the
<Sweetcake> negatives in certain cases. And determine what can be done to make
<Sweetcake> the alternative formats more available to visitors to your site if
<Sweetcake> you feel you might want to offer graphics in that format. Post the
<Sweetcake> results of your discussion.
<Sweetcake> Research the emerging standard of PNG, post the results of the
<Sweetcake> research. Include your opinions on whether of not PNG will be an
<Sweetcake> improvement over what is already available.
<Sweetcake> CHALLENGE 4:
<Sweetcake> Discuss with your group how you envision using graphics on your
<Sweetcake> main class page. Use the logs of your discussions to develop a
<Sweetcake> working plan for employing your ideas. Write up a brief synopsis
<Sweetcake> of your decisions, post it onto your page and distribute it to
<Sweetcake> your group.
<Lexa> i can help somebody in Challenge #5 too
<Sweetcake> too much stuff to do in 1 1/2 weeks.... I say!! What should I do? I know nothing about graphics! Not a thing!
<Troi-> I can also do the part on the Netscape Palette.. I will look into that one and do the research.
<Kwahts> The PNG Gheeta & I are working on is at... http://www.galstar.com/~rhawk/VU_Class_825/Web-O-Crats
<JerseyL> I don't know anything either.
<Kwahts> Thats going to be a WebMap and a Nav-Bar, too
<Troi-> cool Kwahts.. :)
<RiffRaff> Thats why we'll show HOW we did it. :)
<JerseyL> Good :0
<Kwahts> You know what you like...you be the evaluator!
<JerseyL> Did everybody look at the suggested sites?
<Kwahts> Not all.
<Sweetcake> I did not like any of them..either too much graphics or not enough!
<JerseyL> Some of them were pretty bad.
<RiffRaff> not all of them...from what I checked out looked pretty good though.
<JerseyL> I decided I don't really like frames.
<Troi-> I don't care for frames myself.. :)
<Sweetcake> I want to learn frames, but I personally do not like them either..
<RiffRaff> I think I ran across a page that is definitely TOO graphical..reminded me of a Salvadore Dali painting. :)
<JerseyL> One of these?
<Lexa> i had frames on my previous home page, but had problems with them... :))
<RiffRaff> I can't do frames. :( Thats one thing I want to learn for sure..
<Troi-> Did anyone check out our fellow 825 class members URL's from the other groups.. I did.. some are quite good already
<JerseyL> Yes, I loved Page Monsters.
<Sweetcake> Ok..lets go through each of the challenges and make sure we have everything covered...
<Sweetcake> Here is challenge #1:
<Sweetcake> CHALLENGE 1:
<Sweetcake> Discuss with your group what constitutes effective use of graphics
<Sweetcake> on web pages. Log/record the discussion and make it available for
<Sweetcake> the other members of the class so that they may benefit from your
<Sweetcake> insights.
Too few?
<Sweetcake> What do you as individuals prefer? Can you deal with waiting for a
<Sweetcake> long load time if the end result is a treat for the eyes? Or do
<Sweetcake> you prefer streamlined and/or small graphics. How do group members
<Sweetcake> feel?
<Sweetcake> The number and size of graphical elements is far from the
<Sweetcake> only consideration in using graphics in web page design
<Sweetcake> others you might want to start by considering when discussing
<Sweetcake> this challenge and making your decisions:
<Sweetcake> Use of thematic elements for consistency --- using a color/
<Sweetcake> design coordinated set of buttons, bars and background to
<Sweetcake> give a page a polished look.
<Sweetcake> Using images to set a tone or a mood --- Do you want to
<Sweetcake> convey a serious page, a fun page, a "modern" page....
<Sweetcake> Placement of images. Should you use tables, frames or
<Sweetcake> straight HTML for this purpose? What are the benefits or
<Sweetcake> problems with each?
<Sweetcake> Splash Pages -- what are they? Can you use one effectively
<Sweetcake> for your group page?
<Sweetcake> Jeff can possible address the part for the visually impared if he were here..but he does have info posted on his page in reguards to this.
<Troi-> I have enough challenges with the stuff Lexa, Paul and I are doing.. :)
RiffRaff beams.
<JerseyL> What's a splash page?
<Sweetcake> I personally do not mind a long load time if I can still navigate the page while it is loading..hate pages with tons of graphics and they did not use the height and width tags on all the images.
<Lexa> i don't like to wait for a long time to load graphics, but pages look great with them if author use the properly ( not too big)
<JerseyL> I like small graphics, they definitely add to the page.
<Sweetcake> Should we colorcoordinate the background and buttons and stuff?
<Lexa> yes, buty graphics needs to look good also
<Troi-> I agree Lexa.. I guess we should try and make our grapics as small (as in file size) as possible.
<Kwahts> I saw a page that popped up a box, like an input box, that had a cool joke in it...
<Sweetcake> What is a splash page? I never hear of this expression..does anyone know what it is?
<Kwahts> While it was loading...
<Troi-> graphics.. (oops)
<Kwahts> See the above
<JerseyL> The page that popped in a box is a splash page?
<Sweetcake> this is just a quick discussion of part one..it has to be discussed and logged as a group..it not part of the real assignment but is part of our required homework.
<Kwahts> Your mailer ask for a password? That kind of a box...
<Troi-> ahhh.. I get it now.. :)
<JerseyL> I don't.
<Kwahts> You know... like "This will install version 7 of Netscape Navigator...
<Sweetcake> Anyone know what a spalsh page is?
<Kwahts> I think that's a Splash page
<Sweetcake> should we use a themed background and colordinated rules and buttons and stuff?
<JerseyL> Someone told me they thought it was a page that loads up quickly like welcoming you and changes to something else.
<Troi-> Kwahts.. btw .. Bob from your other group is in my Creative writing group, and he had a lot of good things to say about you.. :) He would like to link to our page when it;s finished..
<Sweetcake> maybe we can ask our teachers on friday what a splash page is..
<Lexa> like if you are using <META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="x">
<JerseyL> What does that do?
<Kwahts> Yes!
<Lexa> ....if you are using that pages waits for X seconds and then loads next page
<JerseyL> That makes sense.
Cattlegod [asdf@206.84.199.2] has joined #web-O-Crats
<Lexa> i'm not sure if that are "Splash Pages"
<Sweetcake> Has anyone got any real good examples for challenge #2?
Cattlegod [asdf@206.84.199.2] has left #web-O-Crats
<Troi-> sweetcake.. A friend of ours has a splash page.. http://home1.gte.net/kfid
<Sweetcake> ok.. i'll take a look..
<Troi-> It pops up with a page when you first get on.. and then it automatically goes to the second page. with no help from you
<JerseyL> Thanks
<Sweetcake> Maybe I can do challenge #2 by myself? I think it is easier and really can be done by one person..this leave more people to help with the graphics..
<Troi-> I had seen them before.. but not until Kwhats just told me thats what is was, did I know it was a splash page.. :)
<JerseyL> Did anyone check out the site June sent with the image map? It was unbelievable!
<Troi-> yea.. the house one.. it was neat
<Lexa> Carol, I used that "META CONTENT" or Splah Page on http://www.ljudmila.org/rkslo....if you want to take a look
<Sweetcake> I spent a very long time in that house this morning! It was great!! A good link for I think Grettha & Jeff for their write up and demo on image maps..
<Sweetcake> ok..I'll look at it also..
<JerseyL> Do we have anything else to talk about tonight?
<Sweetcake> Here is challenge #2...Since I did not pick anything yet..and this one has not been taken I can so this one by myself..but would appreciate your sending me good and bad example URLs to look at and to link on the page for this challenge
<Sweetcake> CHALLENGE 2:
<Sweetcake> Have members of your group locate at least one page which, in your
<Sweetcake> group's opinion, uses graphics well and at least one page which

<Kwahts> Did we meet the requirements for discussion & decision?
<Kwahts> 4 Did we meet the requirements for discussion & decision?
<JerseyL> Good use of colors!
<Sweetcake> scroll..up I think we covered everyhthing in #1 that we had to discuss..I'll see if we have to discuss anything else..and then we can get to the hard part and dividing up the work load evenly..
<Troi-> well, I guess Lexa, Paul and I will be busy with designing graphics.. lets keep in touch by email you guys and let each other know how we are doing ok.. or ask each other for help if we need it.. ?
<Kwahts> Wow, Lexa! What a GRABIX!!
<Kwahts> It really grabs ya!
<RiffRaff> Will do, Troi. :)
<Sweetcake> Challenge #4 is also a discussion thing that has to be in the log: What is everyones opinion on this?
<Sweetcake> CHALLENGE 4:
<Sweetcake> Discuss with your group how you envision using graphics on your

<Sweetcake> Linda is doing what's the difference between GIF & JPEG and why each one should or should not be used..
<Sweetcake> Netscape is the Netscape color pallet thing..
<RiffRaff> Choosy Webbers choose GIF. :)
<JerseyL> LOL
<who> GIFs for stiffs!
<JerseyL> Can I use that? and that?
<Sweetcake> 3 & 4 are now combined and what people are doing it besides sasha?
<Sweetcake> sasha patti and who else?
<who> what is pick 6???
<Lexa> Paul, Pattie and Paul
<Lexa> sorry...and ME :)))
<RiffRaff> there's two of me?
<RiffRaff> ohhh.. :)
<Lexa> hihihihi....you know that when i'm sleepy i don't know what i'm doing :)))
<Sweetcake> Maybe I can work on sound with Jeff since it is Patties second choice & she would like to do graphics..I can do the sound thing with jeff no problem and I will also do the homework on which sites we thought were good or bad in realtion to graphics..just send me some urls to check out..
<who> What is pick 6 besides part of the California lottery?
<Sweetcake> Paul patty sasha and paul on graphics?
<JerseyL> New Jersey Lottery too.

<Sweetcake> 3 & 4 are now combined..pick 6 is pick six different graphics..buttons etc and make one and tell how you did it and post it to a page..

<Sweetcake> only need 6 graphics..1 of each kind you choose..has to be self made..if you already have something you made that's great your ahead of the game..have to post it to a page and tell how you made it and upload it to geocities and link it to our main page or let bev know it is there and have her link it to our main page..
<Sweetcake> all 6 graphics can be placed on one big page I guess..
<Sweetcake> eventually it says we should learn from this and by the end of the class..make at least one of each kind of graphic..
<Lexa> I have few of them, so I can upload to my page and later other members can chose which one we will use for main page...if any :))
<Sweetcake> I mean the very end of the semester..by then we should have one example of each thing I guess..
<who> btw: did everyone get clear on the tutorial question?
<JerseyL> Is this an 8-week course or longer?
<who> Ghatten clarified that not each group must do a tutorial each section.
<Sweetcake> right..these graphics will be used in a sorta one page tutorial on graphics and how to make them and then we can also use them on our main page if we choose to..I think we should try to use as many self made graphics as we possible can..
<who> in her words "can't expect anyone to learn Java in two weeks..so how can they do a tutorial in 2 weeks"
<Sweetcake> A great one would be to explain how that t-shirt graphic was made!!
<JerseyL> That would be good.
<Lexa> i can do that :)) i will write tutorial about that
<Sweetcake> I don't know...this class is not really what I thought it would be..though they were going to teach it not have us try to teach ourselves..
<who> group could do a "White-paper" on the proper way to use Java...or how to learn Java...or some such...AND where is the t-shirt i ordered?

<Lexa> :)
<Sweetcake> While we are here and this is logged does anyone have any objections to Jeff being our new co-leader with Bev? I have no objection with it..we really need to have someone step in and take her place as soon as possible..
<JerseyL> Sounds good to me.
<RiffRaff> I think Jeff can handle it, yeah. :)
<who> As long as Jeff doesn't object
<Lexa> I agree with that
