Breeding gerbils is not something to take lightly. Though they may be small, the responsibility isn't! Before you decide to breed, make sure you have enough time, money, and space for all the little critters. And please, don't sell to pet stores if you can avoid it. You never know who will buy your sweet pups!
Here, from both my experience and those of others, I have compiled some important information regarding gerbil breeding. I've included both gerbil behavior during breeding as well as the genetics behind the pups. I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with color genetics as well as with the facts of breeding.
The topics I have covered are:
Gerbil Colors | Here is every gerbil color that I know of, with pictures of most. The genetics were obtained from various other websites.Guide to Genetics | A helpful page with diagrams showing the beginning breeder just what the "alphabet soup" is used for. | Our Genetics | The Danis' genetics. | Breeding Gerbils | Includes facts as well as hints to becoming a successful, responsible, caring gerbil breeder. | Adopt A Dani | Getting a pair from the Dani Clan can start your breeding plans off with a bang ;) | No Pine!! (or Cedar!) | These beddings are harmful to all gerbils, but especially helpless little babies. | Gerbil Breeders | A list of gerbil breeders that I know of. (I'd be happy to recommend you to one if you're not sure where to start or who to trust; I haven't worked with EVERYONE on the list so I can't guarantee anything!) | The American Gerbil Society | A new breeder will want to join the USA's gerbil organization.
