The Mamou Cajun Music Festival began as a one-day festival presenting some of the local Cajun musicians to the citizens of Mamou and Evangeline Parish. It has since become what it is today, a two-day music festival, presenting traditional Cajun musicians, dancing, food, and contest. In the early 1970's, some of the Mamou citizens grew concerned that our culture was dying. These people felt that there was a need to renew the community's interest in our culture, thus was born Mamou Cajun Day. In its beginning, some 20 or so volunteers presented this festival, which was sponsored by the Mamou Area Jaycees. In the early 1980's, this group officially became the Mamou Cajun Music Festival Association, and began to call this festival the Mamou Cajun Music Festival. On Febuary 11,1985, this organization gained its non-profit status as a corporation, based on the promise that we would dedicate ourselved to the preservation of our Cajun culture and heritage through our traditional Cajun music. In May of 86 the festival was selected as one of the top twenty events in an eight state district by the Southeast Tourism Society. In its present form, our organization has an all volunteer membership of some 60 to 70 individuals from Mamou and surounding areas. Our organization takes pride in the fact that we have been able to continue the traditions of our culture and have been able to provide a platform for many traditional Cajun musicians in our area, where they may gain exposure and compensation for their art. At the same time, this event promotes the preservation of our culture by gaining the interest of our children, the citizens of Mamou, and the many tourist who visit our festival from all over the world. Any proceeds gained are used to present the following years festival, so that our culture may live on.
