Jane Gray McWhorter

On October 11, 1987, a headstone was dedicated to Jane at the Carmel Presbyterian Church in Liberty, South Carolina. This church is built upon land that was originally McWhorter land and the bricks that built the church building were made by Samuel Cherry McWhorter.

Along with the few lines regarding her emigration from Ireland to the United States, Jane wrote this little litany:

"Jane Gray is my name and America is my nation,

Abbeville is my dwelling place and Christ is my salvation,

When I am dead and in my grave and all my bones are rotten,

These few lines will tell my name when others have forgotten."

Jane and Jeremiah Barnett McWhorter, her husband, had 4 daughters: Margaret, Sarah Jane, Martha, and Charlotte.  Sarah Jane married Samuel Cherry McWhorter, her cousin, who is mentioned above. Thus, the McWhorter clan continued to grow.
