PETERBOROUGH AND THE KAWARTHAS, ONTARIO

It's summer and the living is easy. That's when many people head to "cottage country" -- but there's much more than summer cabins in Peterborough and the area to the north known as the Kawarthas.

Peterborough is just over an hour away from Toronto and its summertime attractions
draw people from all over the world. There's the annual Festival of Lights concert series,
with some of the best in Canadian music, followed by a light and fireworks display. Then
there's the wonderful Trent-Severn Waterway, which cuts a swath north through Canadian
Shield lakes toward Georgian Bay. Part of the system is the amazing Hydraulic Lift Lock,
a century old and the largest of its kind in the world. There's great food, varied
shopping and the Otonabee River, which winds through the city.

Following the river to the north, you enter the Kawarthas. Its a tourist area that edges the
rocks and forests of the Canadian Shield. And you can't help but get on a boat and head
for the best fishing hole with fishing pole in hand. How did we make out?...Well, you're
going to have to tune into find out.

From there, we visited Petroglyphs Provincial Park, where a huge rock has been carefully
preserved with its ancient native drawings. It's still used today as a sacred place for many
natives.

In Buckhorn, north of Peterborough, there's a grand wildlife art gallery called Gallery on
the Lake. You can fly in, boat in or drive in and view or buy some of the best wildlife and
landscape art in Canada. One of the gallery's most famous contributors is Michael
Dumas, who was born and raised in this area. He tells us why the Kawarthas are so
special to his art, which is recognized worldwide for its studious detail.
