        Unpublished Dissertations and Theses
        An often overlooked resource of information on regional and local history is unpublished dissertations and theses.  When graduate students complete their degree report, they submit two copies of their work.  One is kept in that institution's library or archives for local reading;  the other is usually sent to University Microforms International (UMI) for copying and microfilming.  While UMI will sell copies of these papers to libraries and to individuals.  Sometimes universities will special order theses and dissertations needed by scholars at that institution so it never hurts to see if a local college or university has a copy of a UMI distributed paper in its holdings.
    For those people who want to check what UMI has to offer,  their website will allow searching by Author, Title, and the subject headings assigned by the paper's submitter.

Other than my own master's thesis, I only know of two scholarly papers distributed by UMI that pertain to Amite County's history.  I've supplied the abstract, author/title, and UMI information:
