TO: Wm W Sears Esq, North Carolina, Moore County, Carthage PO July 25 1852
Dear Unkles and relatives
I with much relunc
tance and anxiety I now take pen in hand
so that yo may know that we are all
injoying resasonable health at present and
hoping that we may hear the same good
news from you____I have been looking
along time to get a letter from some of
you of but I now see the vanity of waiting
longer for I begin to see that you dont
care whether we hear from you or not
We have been often enquired of if we had
received any late letters from any of
you and what do you think our answer
always had the misfortune to be? we had to
always answer we had not Then immediately we
would hear this expression "Why it seems strange
they do not write What can be the cause"
and we have to reply we can't tell and we
think as others do that it is strange you
do not write let me tell you that since
I wrote to you I have received ghree letters
from a gentleman that was not any kin
to me only an acquaintance he went
to college a good distance from here and
although he had much to do and many letters
to write to his extensive relationship and others
he has been more mindful of me than you
have in the last letter he wrote he said
he would like to hear from me again
but if I did not wish to do so he would come
to see me in a short time he stayed with me
last night Unkle is it possible that I am
more respected by strangers than my own relatives
if you do not want to have corresponddence with
me I want to know it so I may not be looking
to her from you I want you all to write
to us we would be greatly pleased to hear from
you without you never intend to write to
us again or have you forgoten you have any
relatives in this part of the world if so I want
to rouse up your memories a little enough
on this subject____The corn crops in this
country is not very good this yer on
account of the dry weather wheat crops was
tolerable good but they were hurt a little with
the rest rye and oat crops were excellent
produce is rather cheap there now corn is worth
$1.50 cents per barrel Bacon is worth from 9 to 10 cents
per pound and other things in the same proportion
I will here state that they have a speaking
at white plains to day and they are going to
open Books for folks to subscribe stock for to
help in making a railroad throug here I was in
formed that they in a small town not far from
here raised a subscription of over ten thousand
dollars it is thought the road will be commenced
next fall if circumstances prove favorable
There is a smart chance of talk here about the
next president election and I guess that before
you read this letter our election will be over
I do not expect to vote for either of the candidates
I suppose that SCOTT is an abolitionist and
has the name of being also a roman catholic if
this is the case he will stand but little chance
here for the people are opposed to that kind
of religion__here are my sentiments on this
campaign PIERCE & KING huzza "huzza" huzza
I am taking the news paper and I hear from
both parties and it is allowed this will be
the closest race that has ever been in United
States I presume your election and ours will be
? on which is the 5 of August here is a
of poetry written by a little boy
Old fuss and feathers Scott is called
I'll tell the reason why
He rais'd a fuss a lundy's land
And made the feathers fly
We have not heard from unkle John sears
since last winter I wrote back but he has
done like you entirely quit writing to me I
want you to tell unkle Harvill to write
and Wesley and present my best respects to unkle
Collins and tell him to also write and tell him
that I would like to see another of his letters
in this country, I want you to write immediate
ly yours sincerely DSC Johnson to W W Sears
