Is a lunar calendar: year 1429


The Islamic calendar started when prophet Mohammad emigrated from Mecca to Medina. The lunar months are about 29 to 30 days. The months are as follows:


  1. Muharram
    : The Month of sorrow for the household of the prophet and the faithful.
    1. The 1st is the beginning of the new year.
    2. The 10th is the day of Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s).
    3. The 11th is the day that the household of the prophet were taken prisoners of war from Karbala to Kufa.
    4. The 25th is the death of Imam Ali Ibn Al Hussain (a.s) (the fourth Imam) in Medina.


  2. Safar
    :
    1. The 3rd is the birthday of Mohammad Al Baqer (a.s) (the Fifth Imam).
    2. The 7th is the death of Imam Hasan Ibn Ali (a.s) (the second Imam).
    3. The 7th is also the birthday of Imam Moosa Ibn Ja'afar (a.s) (the seventh Imam).
    4. The 17th is the death of Imam Ali Ibn Moosa Al- Retha (a.s) (the eighth Imam).
    5. The 20th is the 40 days after the death of Al Imam Al Hussain (a.s). Also the day that the household of the prophet had arrived from Al Sham of Syria to Madina.
    6. The 28th is the death of the beloved prophet of Al-Islam , he was 63 years old.


  3. Rabi Al-Awal
    :
    1. The 1st is when prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Madina, it is also this day that he hid himself inside the cave of Thour. His cousin Ali Ibn Abi Taleb (a.s) risked his life by taking the prophets place in his bed in order to fool his enemies.
    2. The 8th is the death of Imam Al Hasan Al Asskari (a.s) (the eleventh Imam).
    3. The 12th is the birthday of prophet Mohammad . It is also the day that he arrived in Madina from Mecca.
    4. The 17th is the day known by the Shia to be prophets Mohammads birthday.
    5. Also on the 17th is the birthday of Al Imam Ja'afar Al Sadek (a.s) (the sixth Imam).


  4. Rabi-Al-Thani
    :
    1. The 10th is the birthday of Al Imam Al Hasan Al Askari (a.s) (the eleventh Imam).


  5. Jamada Al-Awla
    :
    1. The 5th is the birthday of Hazrat Zainab (a.s). Daughter of Imam Ali (a.s) and Fatima Al Zahra (a.s).
    2. The 13th is said to be the death of Fatima Al Zahra (a.s). Her grave is unknown upon her request.
    3. The 15th is the birthday of Ali Ibn Al Hussain (a.s) (the fourth Imam).


  6. Jamada Al-Thani
    :
    1. The 3rd is the day known by most to be the death of the Lady Fatima Al Zahra (a.s).
    2. The 20th is the day that the "Lady of the Worlds" the title that was given to her by her beloved father and messenger of Allah had been born on.


  7. Rajab
    :The month of forgiveness.
    1. The 1st is the birthday of Imam Mohammad Al Baqer (a.s) (the fifth Imam).
    2. The 2nd is the birthday of Imam Ali Ibn Al Hadi (a.s) (the tenth Imam).
    3. The 3rd is the death of Imam Ali Ibn Al Hadi (a.s) (the tenth Imam).
    4. The 10th is the birthday of Imam Mohammad Al Jawad (a.s) (the ninth Imam).
    5. The 13th is the birthday of Imam Ali Ibn Abi Taleb (a.s) (the first Imam).
    6. The 25th is the day that Imam Moosa Ibn Ja'afar Al Khathum (a.s) (the seventh Imam) died.
    7. The 27th is the day that Mohammad was declared as prophet and a messanger by Allah (swt).


  8. Sha'aban
    : The month of giving.
    1. The 3rd is the birthday of Imam Hussain Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Taleb (a.s) (the third Imam).
    2. The 4th is the birthday of Al Abbas Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Taleb.
    3. The 15th is the birthday of Al Imam Al Hujja Al Mahdi Al Muntather (a.s) (the twelfth Imam).


  9. Ramadhan
    : The Holiest month.
    1. The 10th is the death of Khadijah Bint Khawailed, the wife of prophet Mohammad and Mother of the believers. (peace be upon her).
    2. The 15th is the birthday of Al-Hasan Ibn Ali (a.s) (the second Imam).
    3. The 17th is date that the Battle of Bader took place between Islam and the Quraish.
    4. The 19th is the day that Imam Ali Ibn Abi Taleb (a.s) was hit by a poisoned sword from Abdul Rahman Ibn Muljim.
    5. The 21st is the death of Imam Ali (a.s).
    6. The 19th through the 23 is one of the most noble and highly respected night called Al Qadar. This night is equal to a thousand months, perchance that every believer performs all recommended and optional prayers.


  10. Shawal
    :
    1. The 1st is Eid Al Fiter.
    2. The death of Imam Ja'afar Ibn Mohammad Al Sadek (a.s) (the sixth Imam).


  11. Thil-Qa'adah
    :
    1. The 30th is the death of Imam MohammadAl Jawad (a.s) (the ninth Imam).


  12. Thil-Hijjah
    :
    1. The 7th is the death of Mohammad Ibn Ali Al Baqer (a.s) (the fifth Imam).
    2. The 9th is Araft day, where all Hajjies stay on Mount Arafat during Haj.
    3. The 10th is Eid Al Adha.
    4. The 24th is supplication day where the prophet, Fatima, Ali, Al Hasan, and Al Hussain (may peace and blessings be upon them) wanted to supplicate some Christians from Najran. This is mentioned in the Qur'an in Surah "Aali-Imraan" or "The Family of Imran" Ayat: 61.
    5. Also on the 24th Imam Ali Ibn Abi Taleb was praying and in the bowing position he gave a poor man his ring for charity. This event is also mentioned in the Qur'an in Surah "Al-Ma-i'da" or "The Table Spread" Ayat: 55.
    6. The 25th is the day when Surah "Al Insan" or"Dahr" or "Time" or "Man". In this Surah Allah (swt) praises Ali, Fatima, Al Hasan, and Al Hussain (May peace and blessings be upon them).
