        easily!)
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the
Bible. Deuteronomy means the "second law." Moses
wrote this book to help remind the people of Israel to
remember God and to obey God when they reached Canaan.
          Who
        wrote the book of Deuteronomy?
        Moses wrote Deuteronomy. We learned
in our last lesson that there is evidence that Moses
wrote the first 5 books of the Bible. Do you remember
which verses pointed to Moses as the author of "The
        Books of the Law?"

        In studying the book of
Deuteronomy, we will learn about God's laws for his
        people one more time.

What happens in the book of
        Deuteronomy?
        We will learn about Moses
first speech to the people of Israel. Looking Back.
        (Deuteronomy 1-4)
        We will learn about Moses
second speech to the people of Israel. Looking Up.
        (Deuteronomy 5-26)
        We will learn about Moses
third speech to the people of Israel. Looking Out.
        (Deuteronomy 27-33)
        We will learn about the
        death of Moses. (Deuteronomy 34)

        In
Lesson #1, we learned that the first 5
books of the Bible are called the "Books of the
        Law."
        Genesis
        Exodus
        Leviticus
        Numbers
        Deuteronomy
        Deuteronomy is
the fifth book of the Law.

         Who are
the main people that are mentioned in the book of
        Deuteronomy?
        Moses
        Joshua

        Tell Me More!!!
          Deuteronomy 1 - 34
The book of Deuteronomy is made up
of the 3 speeches that Moses gives to the people of
Israel. Deuteronomy also gives us information about the
        death fo Moses.
        Chapters 1 - 4
In the chapters of 1 through 4, you
will read about the first speech of Moses. This speech is
about "looking back." Moses is reminding the
Israelites of how faithful God has been to them since
they departed Egypt. Moses talks to God's people about
their trip from Sinai to Kadesha and on to Moab. Moses
promises the Israelites part of the land that they were
standing on and he tells God's people to obey God.
        Chapter 5 - 26
Chapters 5 through 26 contain Moses'
second speech to the Israelites. This speech is the
"looking up" speech. Moses talks to God's
people again about God's laws and he tells the Israelites
not to disobey God and make God angry.
        Chapters (27 - 33)
        The chapters 27 - 33 contain the
words of Moses third speech to the Israelites. This
speech is the "looking out" speech. Moses talks
to the Israelites and he reviews the agreement that exist
between God and His people. Moses tries to assure the
Israelites that God will protect them.
        Chapter 34
In the chapter of 34, we learn about
the death of Moses. God allows Moses to see the promised
land, Canaan from the top of Mount Nebo. God says,
"This is the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob." Moses dies at the age of 120. The Israelites
are very sad at the loss of Moses. The new leader of the
        Israelites becomes Joshua.

        When did
all of these events take place?
        1450 BC through 1400 BC

        Moses tells God's people
that a prophet will come and the prophet will speak God's
words just as Moses did. Deuteronomy 18:18 says, "I
will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like
you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall
speak to them all that I command him." Joshua was
chosen by God to speak his words like Moses did but when
Jesus came, he was GREATER than Moses, Joshua or ANY of
        the prophets.

          What do you think?
God allowed Moses to see the
promised land even though Moses has disobeyed God. Have
there been times in your life when you have been
disobedient to God? All of us have sinned. The Bible
tells us that "For all have sinned and come
short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23 God loves
you even though you are a sinner. When you have disobeyed
God, you should ask God to forgive you. God will forgive
you if you ask him to. "If we confess our
sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." I John 1:9 God loves
us so very much! God loves us so much that he sent Jesus
to save us! If you would like to know more about asking
Jesus to come into your heart and to save you, please
