12/1994 ......"Jesus must have birthday cake"
A heartwarmer, one of those kids says the sweetest things stories.
When David was about 3-years-old he realized that Christmas was something special and asked me and his Daddy why he gets presents. So we explained to him that Christmas is when we celebrate Jesus' birthday. We said that when Jesus was born people loved him so much that Kings traveled many many miles to bring very precious gifts to him. And that during our celebration of Jesus' birthday we give gifts to our special loved ones because we try to show them how much they're loved.
David went on his merry way which is his usually reaction to something being explained to him.
The next day David came to me while I was fixing our lunch. He asked, "Mommy you said Christmas is when we do Jesus' birthday right?" To which I replied in the affirmative. So he put his little pointing finger on his chin and made a very serious thinking face. "Then how come we don't have birthday cake for Him?" Well this caught me unprepared. The only truthful answer I could give came forth, "David, honey, I just don't know, but that is a real good question."
So David went his merry way again, until lunch was ready. During the meal he hurriedly swallowed a bite, raising his little pointing finger in the air to get my attention, took a drink, and asked the question that began a tradition in our house that year.
"Mommy, can we make birthday cake for Baby Jesus?" Of course, being a Mommy who loves to have fun...and cake I said, "yes we can."
During the course of the day David came to me at different times with ideas for his birthday cake for Baby Jesus. It was to have blue icing all over " 'cause God made the big sky blue and I like it." The cake would have to also be adorned with yellow and green, " 'cause that's the color God made the grass and the big sun in the sky."
When his Daddy returned home from work that day, I told him the story of the birthday cake for Baby Jesus. He was thrilled and amazed that this little boy, who is so busy he's usually a blur, decided to celebrate Jesus' birthday like his own.
Needless to say the cake was made and in the designated colors, which don't always make for a lovely cake, however it is profound. And it is made in the same manner every Christmas. We have Baby Jesus' birthday cake after our evening meal on Christmas Day. It is brought out in the birthday cake fashion, with candles aglow to the singing of "Happy Birthday to You" sung of course to Baby Jesus. The children jointly blow out the candles and we clap our hands and enjoy the cake.
Thanks to my Lord for this wonderful child.
