Comments: I think this is an excelent website. If I would have known about this when my daughter was born prematurely I might not have worried so much. I thought that preemies were rare and that it was all my fault she was born at 32 weeks. When she was born she weighed 3lbs 2.7 ounces. I have never saw a child that small. To top it off I had to have a ceaserean with her. So there were so many things I didnt expect when she was born. Thankfully she is a very healthy baby and got to come home in a month. Now she is almost a year old and is doing great. I have no regrets about the birth, it has taught me alot about life. If I had to, I believe I would do it all over and not change a thing about it.

Comments: Your page was fascinating to me. I enjoyed reading the article on how to touch your preemie and so forth. My smallest preemie is now 20 years old and over 6' tall and off to serve a mission for our Church next week! I am so amazed at all the improvements that have been made in 20 years. We never had a cover for his isolette because they wanted to be able to see the babies. He was bombarded with blinking and beeping sounds. It hasn't really had too much of a negativ effect on him I am happy to say. They also had not coined a word for Kangaroo care yet, but my hubby and I did it anyhow- it was instinctive I guess. I have to say that even though it was an incredible struggle, I highly recommend breastfeeding your pre mie if you can. I pumped milk for months and it was SO worth it. He did great on it. I have listed my story of Shaun's birth in the link above. It's just one page from the website I manage, and I hope it will help someone who needs support. There really wasn't any when I had him. Comments: I am very happy I have found this site. My son was born at 16 weeks premature and was 1lb. 10 oz.And was 11 inches long. He stayed in the hospital for 8 months. Who would have known that a baby that small could fight that hard . Austin did. I want to kno if there are any parents who's preemie has hydrocephalus(IV), g-tube short bowel syndrome and very small for his age. See Austin is very active.Not as in crawling, but an alert child(very alert)loves to chew on everything in sight too! But he weighs 13lb s at 5 years old.We can not get this child to get fat. He has a central line and I almost lost him twice to that. We will not put him thru that again. He use to suck a 4oz. bottle in 45 minutes so we had to do the tube. Which is not to bad . Austin has ha it for 4 years now.He had more than half of his intestines removed at 2 weeks old.If Anyone could give me advice on what I can do to help him in gaining weight, so my little man can grow.

Comments: I was so excited finding this site as we are christians also, and my sister was 25 weeks pregnant, finally after 8 years of infertility treatments, including ivf, she went into laborafter having her placenta seperate, then prom, and she had a son, they na ed samuel, because it means asked of God, and he was 1lb 9 oz. he is almost 2 months now, and doing much better than expected. Comments: Matthew was born at 27 weeks and had double pneumothorax in his first week of life. He recovered from that and at the end of his first month of life got NEC. He had to get 13 centimeters removed. He is a strong little boy and we are very proud of him. He is 5 months old now ( 2 adjusted ) is 12 pounds and 23 inches long. He is a big boy compared to when he was first born. ( 2lbs 1 oz. 14 inches long. )

Comments: I was so happy to find a web site that dealt with preemies and their parents. the few weeks have been very hard for my family. We feel like our lives are on hold. I questioned alot of the feelings I was begining to experience. For instance i began feeling detached from my baby. With every passing day I c ied less, called to check on less, pumped less, thought about her less, and didn't feel like spending that much time in the hospital. I am very scared that I am not bonding with her like I should. I worry about the time she will come home whethe or not i m going to care for her like I did with my full term baby with whom i bonded. Comments: I was induced at 28 weeks due to severe pre-eclampsia and a lot of complications from that. She was 2 pounds 2 ounces and did not do very well for quite a while (her lungs were just too immature). She also suffered a Grade III brain hemmorhage at birth. She finally came home after 2 1/2 months in the NICU, and struggled with severe reflux and poor weight gain. At two she was found to have mild hemiparesis on her left side due to the brain hem. and was in physical therapy for 6 months. She still suffer with asthma and has some lung damage. But seeing Elyse now, no one would ever know her shaky start! She is a vibrant, energetic, intelligent 3 1/2 year old who is just about caught up with age in every way! She is our little miracle who defeated the o ds and cheated death several times! We know she must have a great purpose set out in front of her in her life and she is actively and deteminedly going after it!

Comments: Jordan was born at 26 weeks gestation. He weighed 2#12oz. He was 14 1/2" long. He was on the ventilator for five weeks and now at the age of almost two he has chronic lung disease. He came home on oxygen and was on it until he was eight months old. Jordan has a slow swallow and also has a reflux problem. He is a small guy and he is head strong. Now that the RSV season is nearing again I am hoping that he isn't as chronically ill as he has been in the past seasons. He has a weakened immune system and catche all the bugs in the air! How blessed I am to have Jordan in my life and I am honored to be his Mom.

I thought that this was only happening to us, until we came to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary and discovered that having a preemie is a lot more common than we ever thought. She was delivered vaginally and intubated within minutes of her arrival. She was flown to a very good neonatal unit in Pittsburgh,Pa. My aughter and her husband are emotionally drained, trying to care for their two little boys ages 4 and 2 and trying also to be with Victoria as much as possible. Comments: Matty was born a fighter. My husband and I were amazed at his obvious will to live right from the start.It was amazing to see this perfectly formed,yet tiny creature,kicking about. Born at 1 lb 14 ounces and 13.25 in., Matthew's start in life was anything but natural. His first challenge was the simple task of breathing,then eating,maintaining his temperature, and last but not least, avoiding any complications along the way. The biggist hurdle for Matty was breathing. He required the use of a ventilator or just over 1 month, CPAP for 2 weeks, and oxygen by nasal cannula until he was 10 weeks old. Matty is now 11 weeks old and breathing on his own (although he has occasional apnea episodes which are remedied by a firm rub on the back to remind him to brea h). Matty has done very well with his feedings. He began taking breastmilk by og tube at about the 3 week mark and began nipple feeding small amounts at 7-8 weeks. He is now 11 weeks old and is taking all feedings by mouth.He had his first go at breast fe ding this week! His current weight is 5lbs 3oz and has no longer had trouble maintaining his temperature. Matthew, only by the grace of God,has not been faced with infection or had any severe complications. In fact,he is ready for discharge from the hos ital this week (@37 weeks gestation). Although it was a painful journey, we have learned many lessons from it...we have learned that love is healing and that patience reaps sweet reward. We have also learned to put our faith in God alone and to take none f life's gifts for granted.

Comments: Malea was born at 27 weeks early due to my toximia, she weighed 1lb 6oz and 13" long. We went through the heart valve closing, ventilator, oscillator and many unsure days. I don't ever remember having a thought that Malea wasn't going to be coming home ith us. On September 19, 1997 she came home. Besides being more susceptible to colds, she is our miracle baby, and I thank the doctors, nurses, and all the employees at the NICU at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo for the wonderful care she rece ved. She will be 3 years old on June 16 and she is my most wonderful joy in the world. I kept a journal while we were in the hospital and it helped me then, and now I can look back on it to know what a miracle our family walked through.

Comments: Thomas was born 8 weeks early, due to my pre- eclampsia. He was 3 lbs.he was big for a preemie, but still so small. Because my illness was so advanced Thomas's lungs had matured enough that he only needed oxigen for a few days.He only spent a month in the hospital one month. I was very lucky !!! Thomas is going to be seven soon I love to watch him! Although he is ever so skinny, what he lacks in body wieght he has in momentum!!

Comments: Haley Renee Leverington was born on Feb. 28th 2000 She was due June 25th. She weighed 1lb. loz. She is now 2 months old and over 2 lbs. She is at the nicu at The womans center in Annapolis. She now holds her head up and tries to turn over. She is doing very well. We had some very scary times, but we hope hat's behind us. The nurses are great with her. She has a head full of light blond hair. I can't wait until the day we can take her home, but I am still a little afraid. She is now breathing with just the oxygen. She truly is a miracle baby. I have pictur s of her at all sizes, she has changed so much in the last couple of weeks. She now can open her eyes. Haley had so many people praying for her and such great nurses I think that has helped a lot.

Comments: Dylan is in the ICU at St. Joseph's Hospital, Milwaukee, WI. Nobody tells you anything coupled with being given conflicting information makes you crazy. Hours - I was told any time. Then 11AM to 8PM. Holding - Doctor-yes, Primary Nurse - no. I can hol him without parents there - Doctor - yes, Nurse-no. Dylan was doing very well 2 days ago. Then the nurses switched, and he's setting off alarms every couple of minutes. This is all very stressful since I had his mom maybe 2 weeks early and she was 5 lbs. 4oz. and he was 5lbs. 6oz. Comments: My son Joshua was born 6 weeks early. However, I went into premature labor at 22 weeks and almost lost him. I had dilated 1 cm and was 25% effaced already. The doctors had an extemely hard time contolling my contractions and ended up putting me strict edrest and a continuous IV for the remainder of my pregnancy. I was allowed a 15 minute shower - every other day- and bathroom breaks were limited to 5 minutes or less. (I had contractions when I walked.) It was a very tense time for my husband and I. We took it one day at a time. It's all we could do. My water broke at 34 weeks and Joshua was delivered 29 1/2 hours later via the vacuum extractor. He weighed 5lbs. 1 oz. The good news is that Joshua will turn 1 this May. He is a happy, healthy 22 pound bundle of joy! I realize that we were extremely fortunate and continue to be blessed.

Comments: I had a tear in my eye when I read your story. We were so lucky with Sam, even though he was early, we were told it would be a roller coaster ride with ups and downs, mainly though, they were ups. We were thankful for that. He weighed 3lb 2oz which the told us was heavy for his gestational age. I think it helped him. Your little Sam looks gorgeous and is obviously a "special little soldier". The reason our Sam was born early was put down to "irritated uterus". I have not heard this before and I can't find anything about it on the Net, nor can I find anyone else who has had this. If anyone knows anything about it - especially if it is likely to recur in future pregnancies, I would be grateful to hear from them. Bless you all.

Comments: Thank you for your web site. It is comforting to know at this time that there are people who have gone through what I am going through now and survived. We were told one month ago that our miracle would probably not survive much longer. He had been on he venilator for nearly two months. Mason was born at a pound and a half and has chronic lung disease or BPD. Today, we held our little boy, who is off the vent, and on nasal canula requiring very little oxygen. I thank God for him everyday. God bless ou and your child as well as all of the doctors and nurses who take care of these tiny miracles.

Comments: I have a very soft spot in my heart for the tiniest of God's creations....Preemies. I never thought we'd have a preemie of our own until I developed Hypertension Syndrome and was in dire straits with kidney failure and liver dysfunction. My pregnancy wa high risk to begin with, and we knew Ethan would be early, just not that early. I thank God every day that our littlest child is growing every day, he's our third. Ethan was 4lbs 2 oz at birth and is now 7 lbs 4 oz! His brother and sister just dote on him. My homepage has patterns for preemie and baby clothing. I will be adding more soon. My daughter and I ha e always enjoyed visiting "the sick babies" and leaving gifts for the staff to pass out to the babies. Comments: I started writing earlier and hit the wrong button, so I'm back. Anna was born at 27 weeks, weighing 1lb 7oz, and was 14 1/4 inches long. My water broke Oct.4, and I stayed in the hospital until she was delivered by c-section Nov. 15th. My tear would r -seal only to break again. Anna is doing great. She has BPD, and has had one infection, due to feeding intloerance. She has somehow kept gaining weight. She's up to a whopping 2lbs. 4oz at 6 wks old. We live an hour and 30 min away from Anna's hospital It's really hard, but it helps to read other's comments.

Comments: Tyler and Travis were born at 28 weeks weighing 2 lbs each. Travis stayed in the hospital for 88 days and is doing great now (except for periodic asthma flare-ups). Tyler stayed in for 142 days. He has had a fundoplication and g-tube placement for sever reflux. Right now he is having a hard time gaining weight. We are running test after test to find a reason behind the weight thing. The boys are such blessings. They have completely changed the way I view life.

Comments: Brittany was born at 32 weeks, 5 days and weighed 3lbs, 1oz which was small for her gestational term. I went into early labour due to placenta abruption (cause unknown). Brittany will be two on January 14th 2000 and is the hilight of our lives. She is eing followed up periodically by NICU occupational therapists because of her low birth weight but so far she is right on track.

Comments: I was very lucky with my girls, 13 weeks early and no major problems. But I do like reading other peoples stories. I know just how bad it might have been for us, and I like knowing we aren't the only ones for whom it went well. My girls have been home for about 2.5 months, and other then not being able to take them out and about, it has been just like having a term newborn at home. Times two, of course! :)

Comments: What a labor of love you have created. How truly blessed you are that your little boy is so realitively untouched by his birth experience. So many babies born later have so many problems. Comments: Madison was taken by emergency C-section because she was in distress. She was 1lb. 15oz. and has IUGR. Because she was under such stress she is very tough, and only sprent one day on the respirator, and has had no major medical problems. Her family,especi lly her two older brothers(who were preemies themselves) are hopeing she comes home soon.

Comments: Trey was born May 20, 1999 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital weighing in at 2lbs. 10 oz. The night he was born he was breathing on his own and seemed to be an extremely healthy baby. The doctors were pretty positive that Trey would not be in the hospi al as long as most. Well 9 weeks later and 5 lbs. 7 oz., we are still there. My son has chronic reflux and Stage one ROP (which hopefully will soon fix itself). It's been a long road of more backward steps than forward ones. I am now being told due to his reflux, we will probably be there another 2 months. At first that upset me but now i'm dealing with it. He's gone through so much and it's important to me for him to be 100% when he comes home. He has taught me to be patient, which I never was befor . I'm am so blessed to be his mother.

Comments: Just wanted to comment on how moving I found your website. I too underwent IVF treatment and know what a tough road the infertility treatment alone is. What a tough time you had. I had a lot of bleeding incidents and was on bedrest at home, though not as trict as yourself. My triplets were born by emergency C-section after unrecognised premature labour (I was sure I was in labour, the doctors were sure I wasn't). Both my boys have had (and are still having) a tough time, 5 and 6 months in hospital, etc...I don't need to tell you, you've been through so much. What I did want to mention though was my Alex sounds so much like Samuel ...He can count to thirty and can ecognize and identify both upper and lower case letters of the alphabet. Sammy is becoming quite the singer! He sings to himself quite often ... Alex never stops singing and has the most beautiful voice, knows so many songs by heart and can nearly read, b t does not really converse with us, he has developmental delays and a problem with interaction, although he is moving forward all the time. Stephen is progressing wonderfully. We also are so incredibly proud of our two sons, and our recent FT daughter, 6 eek old Amy. Sorry for going on, it's hard to comment on such things very briefly. I will be starting to volunteer to make outfits for the preemies there at TMC this year. I am very excited about giving back. Comments: Samantha Rosa was born only seven weeks early but due to severe IUGR was only 1 pound 10 ounces and 12 inches long. After much infertility trials we were ready for the fight to help our daughter. Thank goodness she also was a fighter and she came home 7 weeks later at 3 pounds 6 ounces. She is doing well now and is 51/2 months and up to 9 pounds 5 ounces. I can't wait to see her at one year!!!!!

Comments: My twin sister, 1 lb 7 oz, and I, 2 lbs, dont remember anything abour being in the NICU for 6 months but I found it interesting and educational about how fragile preemies are...as wondered why NICU lights were always dim, babies' eyes covered, etc. My sis and I both have many complications but today requirew no machines, etc...but I have mild ROP without any nec. intervention and my sis has hyaline mem disease so is a bit pneumonia prone..but only happens once a while! I wud love meeting more preemies out there as we all have such a unique connection!

Comments: David is 7 1/2 wks old now, still in the hospital, but doing very well and is expected to be released as soon as we can get the breastfeeding thing going. He's done remarkably well, no major problems and has gone from a birthweight of 2lb 11oz to 5lb 6oz I never thought 4 and 5 pounds would sound so big! David is our 10th child and our first preemie. Having a preemie changes a lot of previous thoughts about babies and there is sure a lot of new things to learn. They are really different, but as you have said about your Sam, I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. They are more than worth it.

She has had several near death experiences but the Lord has taken care of her. She was diagnosed with 3 bleeds in her brain ca sing cerebral palsy. She wears glasses. She has a skull abnormality and had to wear a helmet for 4 months. She has a micky(gt)button that I feed her through. She is crawling now(14 months). She is always happy and is always smiling(even when she gets a hot). She has been through so much and life is a challange everyday but to her, it is all she knows. Comments: I had to sign your book since our kids are just about the same age, my girls will be three on 10/19, due January 9. I had triplets, my last daughter Marygrace Therese lived only a short time after birth. She was 1 lb 6 oz and 12" long. My other two gir s, Alice Margaret (2 lbs 6 oz, 14") and Jennifer Claire (2 lbs 1 oz, 14-1/2") are just about caught up except for some mild delays in Jen and moderate ones in Alice. They are into everything, and it's great (most of the time anyway haha). God knew the p in I went thru back then, burying one daughter and living the NICU life with the other two for 6 and 8 weeks. He rewarded me beyond measure when my son David Anthony was born 12/1/97, four days late! At 7 lbs 4 oz and 21" he was huge!! Having a kid who is doing age appropriate things is mighty strange, so is having three kids under three! But after all the infertility struggles and heartaches, we're happy to be one big nutty gang. Comments: We applaud your web page with the info about the birth of your son. What an inspiration your story would have been to us during the rough times after Trey's birth. Trey was born at 24 weeks weighing 1 lb. and 4 ozs. Thanks to the grace of God he did not have any bleeds but did have to undergo eye surgery at two months of age. The doctors told us he would never be normal and would most likely be blind. Today, Trey is a happy, healthy two year old.
