Arame with Onions and Carrots

2 tb Roasted sesame oil
2 c Onions -- halved and sliced
1/2 c Carrots -- peeled and grated
1 tb Tamari
2 c Dried arame
2 c -- water
1 tb Barley malt syrup
2 tb Gomasio*
2 tb Tahini
Heat the oil in a large skillet. Saute the onions and
carrots with the tamari for 5 minutes, stirring
constantly. Add the remaining ingredients and stir
well. Cover the skillet and cook until the vegetablrs
have absorbed all of the water (about 20 minutes).
Serve hot.
Variation: Sauteed Arame in Onion Baskets
Cut each of the 4 onions in half crosswise. Cut a
thin slice from the bottom of each onion half so it
will sit level. Hollow out the center, leaving about 3
layers of onion. Steam the onion halves for 3 to 4
minutes. Set aside.
Prepare the recipe for Arame with Onions and Carrots.
Fill the onion halves with the arame mixture while it
is still hot. Garnish with thinly sliced scallions and
serve immediately.
*Gomasio is a condiment available in most health food
stores
