The passing away of A. H. Percival 4:40 p.m. yesterday at his home on Voorhees avenue removes from life Camden's oldest volunteer fireman and a life-long, esteemed resident of the town. Death was due to paralytic shocks, three in number affecting his right side. His final sickness dates back to two weeks ago today.
Adelbert H. Percival was a son and only child of the late George and Caroline (Scoville) Percival and was born on what is now the Richardson farm, north of Bryant Hill, May 15, 1859. When a small lad his parents moved nearer the village on what is now the Helmer farm on the southerly slope of Bryant Hill. Here he grew to manhood and was associated with his father in the building business. November 13, 1879 he married Mary Rush and they lived in a new house which he had erected across the road from the parents' homestead. Ten years later they moved into the village to Miner avenue where they resided a year until his late home, where he died, was ready for occupancy in 1890. His home was the first erected on Voorhees avenue after the street was laid out.
For six years Mr. Percival was employed in the express business by R. M. Rush and for over 25 years he conducted a trucking business. He joined Rescue Hook & Ladder Co. in 1890, had served as foreman of the company and also as fire chief for two years. He was always active in the department affairs and one of its most popular members. For years Dell and his team could be depended on in time of emergency to draw the apparatus to the fire, a great service to the community which he gave freely and gratis. Mr. Percival was a member of Camden Lodge, No. 718, I.O.O.F., and a Past Noble Grand of the order. He was a member of the Camden Cornet band during the years of its existence. A man who had a host of friends Mr. Percival's death brings sadness to many.
Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Frank A. Sanborn and Miss Maude Percival of this village and a grandson, Donald Sanborn.
The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the family residence, the Rev. C.G. Roop and the Rev. N.A. Darling of Boonville officiating. Interment in Forest Park cemetery.
