Jay E. Loevenguth, 63, retired former educator who was a native of Camden, died July 25, 1948, at
his home, 80 Second street.
He was born here July 2, 1885, a son of George and Susan Pilkington Loevenguth. For the past
several years he had been in poor health and had been mostly confined to his home.
He was a graduate of Camden High School and of Hamilton College, where he was a member of the
Class of 1910. He later received a master's degree from Columbia University.
He married Beulah Moran of Camden in this village on August 14, 1912. He was high school
principal in the towns of Andes, Groton, Cattaraugus, Lyons, Sherman, and Turin and had taught
mathematics and science at Camden Central School for several years.
For 26 summers he was connected with Chautauqua program at Chautauqua Lake, and while his health
permitted was active in church and civic affairs until he retired in 1944.
Surviving besides his widow are a daughter, Mrs. Tillman Wenk, Sayville, L.I.; a sister, Miss
Augusta Loevenguth and one brother, Earl B., both of Camden; two granddaughters, Jacqueline and
Cynthia Wenk, Sayville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Camden.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the B. A. Sanborn & Son funeral home, conducted
by the Rev. W. H. Bradley, and burial was in Forest Park Cemetery.
Those attending the service from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Moran, from Watertown; Mr.
and Mrs. Wilson Loevenguth, from Marcellus; Mrs. Frank Allen and son Barnard, of Syracuse; Mrs.
Orville A. Manzer and Mr. and Mrs. Morris Burr of Turin.
The bearers were Floyd Clark, Clarence Babcock, Whilfred Seubert, Thomas Regan, Walter Sanger
and Russel Johnson.
