Martin Thalman died of Bright's disease at 9:15 A.M. today at his home, 140 North James street. He had been out of health for a long time and for the last few weeks had been very low most of the time.

Martin Thalman was a son of the late Samuel Thalman and was born in Alsace, Germany, Oct. 13, 1834. In 1843 he came to America with his parents, who located in New Jersey. Subsequently they removed to West Leyden, Lewis county. In 1857 the deceased came to Rome and obtained a position as clerk in the grocery store of the late Henry Hayden, which was located at what was then No. 13 James street, in the old Armstrong block, which stood on the site of the present Bingham block on the west side of James street between the Erie Canal and Front street. About 1863 or '64 the deceased and William W. Smith who went west several years ago, bought out Mr. Hayden and continued the business under the firm name of Smith & Thalman. In 1867 Mr. Thalman bought the livery business of Hartwell & Griffin and continued it until his death.

Mr. Thalman was of genial disposition and always had a kindly word for his friends and acquaintances, who were many not only in Rome and immediate vicinity but all through Oneida and adjoining counties. He was a lifelong Democrat and took an active interest in politics. He served as alderman of the first ward from March, 1879, until March, 1882. he also served three years as member of the board of excise under the administration of Hon. Jim Stevens as mayor.

In 1858, Mr. Thalman was married to Miss Lucy Rush of Camden, who survives him. He also leaves four children, Mrs. Charles J. Niess, Misses Nellie and Lulu and Martin Thalman jr. of Rome. Also four brother, Fred of Dix, Samuel of Rome, Jacob of Geneva and George of Clifton Springs, and three sisters, Mrs. S. Miller of Utica, Mrs. W. Parke of Syracuse and Mrs. Edward Lynch of Blue Island Ill.
