WILLIAM SWANSON

ship sailing

He was a native of North Britain, Caithness Co., Scotland; and right rigidly did he honor his
origin and early environments, in the great physical power and endurance, with an almost stubborness
of will, that are prominent elements in the marked individuality of stern character. With his
amiable wife, Margaret Lambie, and their three children he made the six-months' voyage to America in
sail-ship, settling in Lockport, N.Y. in 1828. Investing what money he had left in land, they shared
the severe experiences of those early times in gaining a livelihood. After four years he came thence
to Amboy, Mexico and Camden, where he lived a number of years. His companion died 11 years
since. Four of their eight children with a goodly group of grandchildren and several great-
grandchildren, survive him. Born and reared among Covenanters, Mr. Swanson here found his religious
home with the Presbyterians. The funeral, in his sanctuary home, on Sunday afternoon, was largely
attended. An excellent sermon was preached by Rev. E.N. Manley.

DIED
SWANSON -- At the residence of his son George, Nov. 1, 1883, William Swanson, aged 86 years and
10 months.
