Passport to Adventure-Greece (Greece)

This event was planned as a Service Unit Thinking Day event. We used our local Girl Scout Program Service Center and set up one room as a mock airplane. When everyone arrived, they received their passports and tickets boarding passes. After they "boarded" the plane, they were served peanuts and soda while they watched part of the Disney flick "Hercules". Upon "arrival" in Greece, they completed several activities (on a rotating basis) as outlined below:

Session Rotations

Session rotations included the following activities (each 20 minutes long):

Daisy/Brownie Session Rotations:

1. Komboloi (worry beads): We strung pony beads on a decorative string

2. Greek Flag Puzzles : We printed copies of the Greek Flag off the computer and mounted them on poster board tand then cut them apart in.puzzle pieces and put them in ziplock bags. During the session, the girls put together the puzzle and then with extra time did coloring sheets of the story of the Trojan Horse.

Junior Session Rotations:

1. Komboloi: See Brownie Sessions above.

2. Greek Alphabet: We gave handouts based on the Greek alphabet and also Greek numbers (from Travlang site below). We made a message they had to decode using the Greek letters ("Happy Thinking Day, Girl Scouts).This was made easy using the Print Shop Deluxe and the Symbol font which is Greek letters). We also taught them several words in Greek using the Travlang site as a reference)

Spontaneous Role Play

We asked for 5 Junior age volunteers and did the Story of Narcissus role play. We provided togas as costumes.

The Odyssey Rap

The PA's performed "The Odyssey Rap" dressed in Togas. The rap was taken from a book of Greek activities and was very clever. I cannot produce the script here to do copyright infringement but if I can find the name of the book I will post it here.

Mini-Olympics

We had three events

1. Javelin : How far can you throw a straw?
2. Discus: How far can you throw a paper plate?
3. Shot Put: How far can you throw a cotton ball?

Prizes were given in each event to the troop with the top three best averages. Individual awards were given in each age levelto the top individual score.

Airline Script

On behalf of Northrose Airlines we would like to welcome you aboard flight 615 bound for Greece. Please direct your attention to the flight attendant who will demonstrate the safety features of this Virtual 747. This aircraft is equipped with 2 exits, one in the front of the airplane and one at the rear. Please take a moment to locate the exit nearest you realizing that the closest exit may be behind you. At this time please make sure that your seat belts are securely fastened. To fasten your seat belt, insert the tab into the buckle. To release, simply pull the tab out. Our aircraft is pressurized for your comfort however if
there should be a sudden drop in cabin pressure, oxygen masks will appear from the ceiling above. Pull down on the mask, place it over your mouth and nose and breathe normally. It may be held in place by the elastic strap. If you are traveling with small children, please secure your own mask and then assist your child. After take off we will be coming through the cabin with complementary beverages and snack. Due to the short duration of our flight we ask that you remain seated at all times.At this time please make sure that your seat backs are in their upright and locked position as we prepare for takeoff.

This is your captain. Welcome aboard flight 615 to Greece. Our cruising altitude is 30,000 feet. We will be arriving in Greece in approximately 12 minutes. Please sit back and enjoy the flight.

Gia’sou , Hello and welcome to Greece where the current temperature is 85 degrees. On
behalf of the flight crew I would like to thank you for choosing Northrose Airlines and we
hope to serve you again in the near future.

Notes:

Northrose Airlines was used because Northrose is the name of our Service Unit. Passports were made on the computer using an actual passport as a model. The area for Visa stamps was used to verify each girl had come to the station (they received a sticket at each station-stamps can also be used). Airline tickets and ticket folders were also made on the computer with a place indicating their seat assignment. For seat belts, we used crepe paper streamers with buckles make from card stock (one side has a tab and the other side is folded over and has a slit in the fold in which to insert the tab). For oxygen masks, we used large yellow plastic cups with holes punched on either side of the lip of the cup.We attached an elastic strap to those holes. The return flight used the same script however it was reversed to return to California instead. Also, since our return flight was much shorter we did not serve snack again and explained the shorter flight by saying that there was an extreme tailwind and we would be arriving sooner than expected.
