This was designed as an activity rotation with 1hour designated for each station.
Station #1: Hand Dipped Candles
We purchased block parafin at Nasco along with their wicking and canlde coloring. We had campstoves set out to melt the wax by placing a can of wax in a can of water in the stove (ie., double boiler). We then had each girl take a 6" wooden dowel and tie on one of her wicks (each girl got two wicks about 9" in length). She then dipped in the hot wax which had been placed on the ground and then got to the end of the line. There were two different colors of wax and the candles the girls came up with were quite creative. The instructions we had said to pull the wick after the first couple of dippings to make sure the wick stayed straight; however, many of the girls did not want to do that and ended up with very creative curly candles. This was a very popular station.
Station #2: Bead Looms
We took the instructions off of the Making Friends site (Making a Pony Bead Loom , Using Your Bead Loom and U.S. Flag Pony Bead Pattern). Unfortunately, this was a hassle to deal with in an hour. With more time this would've been more successful. The stringing of the looms was a major pain as we had to do it in between sessions when we found that the girls were too slow at stringing them to be able to complete the entire project in an hour. I would recommend having looms all pre-strung and strings pre-threaded for the girls for each session to make this run smoother. The girls enjoyed the end product but got frustrated with the activity.
Station #3: Archery
We utilized a trained adult to facilitate this session. Our only problem was trying to accommodate up to 20 girls in a one hour session. Having only 10 in each session would've made this run much smoother; however, then the girls would not all have had the opportunity to participate.
Station #4: Dream Catchers
We again utilized the Making Friends site for this using their Dream Catcher instructions. We used yarn instead of twine and leaders complained that it kept breaking. I would suggest going with the twine if you are to do this or use their Yarn Dream Catcher which is made a little differently.
