Born: November 15, 1995 Went to Heaven: January 18, 1996
My grand-daughter was born with a birth defect that prevented her from having the front half of her brain. It also caused her to have no nose and no palate. She was born one and a half months premature. She weighed 4 lbs. 12 ozs. and was 19 in. long.
My daughter and her friends enjoyed the effect of drinking down bottles of cough syrup. They loved the way it made them feel like they were "tripping." The last time she did this, she did not realize that she was pregnant. She had made the decision to stop. Unfortunately, it was too late for the baby. No one knew that this was caused by the cough syrup. I found the article below and have posted it here so any girls out there that may be doing this, will stop and think twice about it's effects if you should get pregnant. Mikayla was not very happy most of the time. She had convultions all the time and her body could not regulate it's temperature. We would get up every other night and have to give her a bath to lower her body temperature as Tylenol would not work. Please think twice about doing anything to your body if there is any chance you could be or could get pregnant. This is not just your life you are dealing with.
Mikayla is happy and whole and living with Jesus now! One day I will be able to see her perfect face!
Studies Link Cough Syrup Ingredient to Birth Defects
Dextromethorpan, a common ingredient found in cough syrups and tablets such as Robitussin, Nyquil, and Tylenol Cold, has caused severe birth defects in chicken embryos. The malformations include NTD's such as spina bifida, facial defects such as cleft palate, and cranial defects. The study, by Doctor Thomas Rosenquist and his colleagues at the University of Pediatric Research of Nebraska, was published in the January issue of Pediatric Research. Dr. Rosenquist stated: "We found that Dextromethorpan causes defects so early in the development of the embryo that in many cases the woman wouldn't even know she was pregnant. We feel that a single doe is capable of causing a birth defect, and that, ultimately, it could be the cause for a woman to have a miscarriage." Dextromethorpan suppresses coughing by acting on receptors in the adult nervous system, but in embryos, the drug appears to "knock out" the receptors, leading to birth defects.
