In mid-July our Mudgie was diagnosed with kidney failure and hospitalized for treatment including a blood transfusion from a wonderful cat named Domino (seen below with Dr. Jane Bemben). After we brought her home, we found she had also developed an upper respiratory infection because of her damaged immune system. Even with strong antibiotics, she couldn't shake it. Without being able to breathe correctly, she couldn't smell her food, and so wouldn't eat. Mudgie's health quickly worsened and she finally (on 8/24/98) went to The Rainbow Bridge to be with our Tori, Tommy, Spice, and all of the other loved animals, to be fat and healthy once again. Please read about her life below.
Our Mudgie was an impulse buy. We always stopped by the pet store when at the mall just to see the puppies and kitties. On December 12, 1992, there she was, so tiny and adorable and alone. I instantly fell in love with her. She had 2 gray smudges on top of her head, so we named her Smudge. But, as she grew up, the color faded away and she became a soft, round Mudgie.
Squeaker and Tori always treated Mudgie like an outsider, so she became my lovergirl. Not until after we lost Tori did she and Squeaker become friends. Her favorite toys are sock mice that Les makes out of old baby socks filled with catnip. She really goes nuts when they're fresh. She also loves rolling around on the living room floor under the ceiling fan. Her favorite treats are Nacho Cheese Doritos, butter, and onion/chive cream cheese. Oh, and don't forget the lasagna! She's like Garfield with Italian food.
Mudgie's favorite napping places are inside the house section of the cat condo, in a wooden baby cradle in my daughter's room, by my legs when I have the foot of the recliner up, or in front of the keyboard when I'm trying to work on the computer. Her spot in the bed at night is right up against my left side or between my legs. Of the 3 cats we have now, Mudgie is the sweetest and the most timid. Strangers and storms send her running for cover under one of the beds.
Mudgie's nicknames are Mudga, Wudga, Fudga, Wudgie, and Fudgie. Her greatest achievement is winning "Best Pose" in Roscoe's Most Photogenic Feline Contest.
