EDWARD CHERRY NEWBEGIN

Edward Cherry Newbegin 4/8/1930 - 1/30/2005
My Dad was a complex and highly intelligent man. He was very proud of his career with the US Navy and his work in the field of strategic intelligence during the latter days of the Cold War. He was a selfless volunteer, giving many hundreds of hours to the Red Cross, the Boy Scouts and the local sheriff's department in Charleston, SC. He also served as a docent for the USS Yorktown at Patroit's Point. I learned a lot from my old man about respecting others as fellow humans in this rat race and giving back to your community. I'll always be grateful to him for that. We scattered his ashes in the water just off the port bow of the USS Yorktown at Patriot's Point in Charleston, SC, where he worked as a docent, on 2/5/05. There is a picture of him from the glory days still posted behind the reception desk. I wrote a song to him that expresses my feelings. I hope you like it.
Daddy I know
Daddy, I think I know - 'bout the pain that you went through
And the things it made you do.
Daddy you saw the mountain ahead of you - and you always shone through
Daddy, now I got some kids of my own - and I see myself in their eyes
And I hear your voice in my mind
I'm sayin' the same ol' things that you used to - Daddy I'm you
You said: "If you break your leg it's no fault of mine"
Get your act together better get it in line
The world don't give you nothi' only nothin' is free
You're actin' like you never even listen to me
Listen to me
Listen to me!
Daddy, I know your days were hard and long - cuz' I'm feelin' that way myself
Just a-workin' myself to death
Daddy I hope I'll be as strong as you - and my will stays true
I'll know I've made my peace when I'm carried away
To the place where the spirits and my old dogs play
I want thank you now for bein' a boss and a friend
I know we'll see each other in the promised land
Promised land
Promised land
Via con Dios, me padre...
