The smell of the early mornings feeding. The sound of the trailer being loaded, the horse’s hoofs hitting the wooden floor with a loud yet soothing clank. All of these are moments we all enjoy in some way. But are you ready to start again? We have put together a small checklist you may want to go over before starting up again!

  • The major importance in this show is you horse. Is he fit enough for this departure? Don’t take a winter-pastured horse to a show without working on him to rebuild muscle and behavior! You don’t want to hurt your horse or yourself.

  • Check over all your tack supplies and saddles. Are you in good shape with materials?

  • Your trailer, is it ready to leave and take the pressure of the harsh roads and restless horse? Is there anything sticking out from the stalls in the trailer that could possible injure your horse?

  • Are you ready and comfortable with your riding? If you don’t think you and your horse are bonding to well skip this show, there will be others.

  • Check your horse’s hoofs. Are the shod? If so are they all correct and no missing shoes?

  • Is your horse fit and ready to go? Not lame or sick.

  • Have you given your horse proper shots and coggins tests!!

  • Before taking off, remember to double-check all your things. Lord knows you probably leave SOMETHING behind at home every visit to the show grounds.

This is just a simple list that you should check over this year. And remember, without a healthy in shape horse it isn’t a show. So take your horse out often because a horse show is a lot of work on a horse, more than you might think.
