Bible Quizzing, how it is done the Sacramento Way.

You may be new to the idea of using the Bible in competition. The idea may take some time to get used to. The quizzers take a small portion of scripture and study it for a year. It may be either one book or a few smaller books. This year teens across the nation, and world, will be studying Romans and James. Many of the quizzers will have these books memorized by the end of this year. They then compete in quiz meets across the country. There are a number of organizations and churches that sponsor quizzing programs. Our family is involved with Nazarene Teen quizzing, so that will be the focus of this page.

We will have 4 district quiz tournaments. At these tournaments churches will enter teams of up to five members. These teams will have a round-robin style match where they will quiz in turn against four other teams. Each quiz consists of 20 questions. At the end of this competition the top teams will be face each other in team playoffs. The top 4 teams are recognized.

There are five types of questions asked in Nazarene quizzing this year. In a 20 question quiz there are 11 "Content" questions. These questions are about general knowledge and information that can be found within the text. There are 4 "According to" questions. These are specific to a verse in the covered material. These are useful when there is more then one location in the material that can have the same question. There is one "Context" question. These questions cover a broader area. You might even find questions from the footnotes. There is also one "In what book and chapter" question. As it says, a passage is read and the quizzer must tell which book and chapter the passage is found in. The final type of questions are "Memory" questions. There is one of each of the three types; "Finish this verse", "Finish this verse and give the reference" and a "Quote". On alternating years, when there is only one book quizzed on, "Situation" questions replace "In what book and chapter" questions. Each correct answer is worth 20 points.

The individual scores are only based on the round-robin matches. Individuals have a possibility of 360 points for a day. The top 15 quizzers for the day are recognized. From the second tournament on the top 15 average scores are also announced. At the fourth tournament, each quizzer's lowest score is dropped and their three remaining scores are averaged, this determines the top 15 for the year.

At the end of the year, each church sends their best team to Team finals. The team that wins this will represent our district at Regionals. Also, there will be a Top 15 competition. All 15 quizzers compete at one time. The first 5 to reach 100 points will become an All Star Team to represent our district.
