Chapter 12
The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon
(Rev 12:1 KJV) And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
Rev 12:1: (vv. 1-5) The woman clothed with the sun cannot be the church. Christ gave birth to the church, not the church to Christ. The 12 stars upon her head are a certain indication that she should be identified as Israel. The Child which she delivers is the Christ (v. 5). The dragon who drew a third of the stars, probably a reference to the angelic hosts, from heaven is Satan (v. 4). Thus, a panorama of messianic history from the birth and the ascension of Jesus to the three and one-half years of persecution of the nation of Israel is revealed.
Verses 1-6. The church, under the emblem of a woman, the mother of believers, was seen by the apostle in vision, in heaven. She was clothed with the sun, justified, sanctified, and shining by union with Christ, the Sun of Righteousness. The moon was under her feet; she was superior to the reflected and feebler light of the revelation made by Moses. Having on her head a crown of twelve stars; the doctrine of the gospel, preached by the twelve apostles, is a crown of glory to all true believers. As in pain to bring forth a holy family; desirous that the conviction of sinners might end in their conversion. A dragon is a known emblem of Satan, and his chief agents, or those who govern for him on earth, at that time the pagan empire of Rome, the city built upon seven hills. As having ten horns, divided into ten kingdoms. Having seven crowns, representing seven forms of government. As drawing with his tail a third part of the stars in heaven, and casting them down to the earth; persecuting and seducing the ministers and teachers. As watchful to crush the Christian religion; but in spite of the opposition of enemies, the church brought forth a manly issue of true and faithful professors, in whom Christ was truly formed anew; even the mystery of Christ, that Son of God who should rule the nations, and in whose right his members partake the same glory. This blessed offspring was protected of God.

- Isa 62:3 Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.
(Rev 12:2 KJV) And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
- I believe the woman is The Holy Spirit, The beginning of the church, the working of the Godhead.
John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. The sun and the moon are to show that from Israel God gives all power to the child that is born. The world had to suffer and Gods people had to suffer much before the Birth of Christ. What is the crown of God or the purpose of his creation? The people, he could make many worlds but the world with out people is worthless. Each tribe is what a star would be; not all stars are of the same glory. To Jacob (Israel) the promise was given that there would be a last day but first a great Saviour. I believe that there had been many prayers prayed to bring about the birth of Christ and I believe that there are many prayers being prayed to bring him again.
(Rev 12:3 KJV) And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
12:3-17 EVIL AND SUFFERING, Satan-- Satan, the accuser, no longer has access to the heavenly throne. Christ was born of woman, suffered, died, was raised, and ascended to heaven. Satan, the dragon, lost the heavenly battle and was cast down to earth. Christ's victory is sure. He reigns in heaven. Christians must still endure suffering because Satan is still loose on earth and enraged against Christ's followers because Satan knows his time is short
- Isa 26:21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
- Isa 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.
- Ezek 29:3 Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.
(Rev 12:4 KJV) And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
- I believe that Satan is the dragon and that he could not wait for Jesus to be born just as he can not wait for us to be born again. For as soon as this happens the war begins, he try to deceive us and deaf us for he already lost the battle with Christ through he began the moment he was born when he sent the king Herod to slay the baby's.
- 2 Cor 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
- 2 Cor 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
(Rev 12:5 KJV) And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
- Psa 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
- Psa 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
- Psa 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
- Psa 2:10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
- Psa 2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
- Rev 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
- "Caught up" is a form of the Greek word harpazo, the same word used in 1 Thess. 4:17 in reference to the rapture of the church.
12:5 JESUS CHRIST, Ascension-- Jesus was a human born of a woman. Unlike other humans, He was resurrected and taken up to God. In His redemption on the cross came power to overcome Satan and establish God's eternal kingdom under Christ's authority.
(Rev 12:6 KJV) And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
- Once Jesus was resurrected the world began a new phase of existence. The 12 tribes of Israel had missed the message the church as we know it was just beginning. A time like a wilderness, where there was no organization and much to be learned and still is. Again one must realize that I see the woman as the representation of the church at large the mother of the beginning, The Holy Spirit, for her crown was the tribes of Israel but her pride was in her child and the inheritance of the child's people. The church went through a time of hiding, then it began to spring forth, it has just now really began to blossom.
Satan Thrown Out of Heaven
(Rev 12:7 KJV) And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
(Rev 12:8 KJV) And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
(Rev 12:9 KJV) And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
- This seems to me to be a little appropriate history for it clearly is past tense, there was, and it was clearly a large event for it says war. Also note that is says the Devil was cast to earth where he is the great deceiver. He is not alone for he has his foul spirits are his angels. The whole world his dwelling there is no place to hide except in the protection of Christ. Yet the next verse raises the question of when the war accrued for if it was before the world then would he have been allowed to face God and contend for Job? And if he is already cast out how can he be standing now accusing our brethren? Some believe that this war took place just after the birth of Christ, some say it was in the 400 years of the dark ages. Some feel it was before the fall in the garden, and think that through Satan is not allowed to live in heaven he sure access to make request of God or contend for our souls. For if you back up a little you see that the history is thrown in as a method for us to understand the next events. It could be that verse 10 is refereeing to his Second Coming after the church is raptured. ( well actually while the church is being taken and all of these events are going on ) One other thought that jumps out at me is that the brethren could mean fellow angels and that the problem in heaven is a trouble maker that is always coming to God complaining about all the other angels. For notice it says later that woe to the earth for the Devil has just a short time to trouble us and it is placed after the mention of the Lamb. Of course this can be explained by the fact the Satan does only have a short time to try and destroy the world. Yet it seems to me that the most logical is that this did indeed take place between the new and Old Testament. For it would appear that Satan did have access to the throne and did contend for the Saints, such as Job, and that now is cast out. So indeed salvation came to the world in Christ, which is what Jesus said to Zacheus.
(Rev 12:10 KJV) And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
12:10-12 GOD, Sovereignty-- Even Satan recognizes the authority and power of God. Christ has overcome Him. In relation to eternity he has only a brief time to do his evil work. Victory rests with God and with God's people.
(Rev 12:11 KJV) And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
- To return to my earlier thoughts for a moment, these verses's show that we are overcomes by the blood of the Lamb. If the earlier verses were in reference to an event that took place after the rapture as some teach then how could they overcome? We are the ones that the Lamb was slain for; it is us that are taught to testify
. 1 Pet 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: It is to the church that the letter is written to be an overcomer. If we are to make it through the times that we live it will be because we have a testimony or a witness of Jesus in our lives, it will be clearly visible to all that know us. And we will love God more then our own lives or we will not make it.
Rev 12:11: Several promises in the book focus on those who overcome. The method of "overcoming" is the atonement of Christ and the testimony concerning His sacrifice. Only He is sufficient to expel Satan.
Verses 7-11. The attempts of the dragon proved unsuccessful against the church, and fatal to his own interests. The seat of this war was in heaven; in the church of Christ, the kingdom of heaven on earth. The parties were Christ, the great Angel of the covenant, and his faithful followers; and Satan and his instruments. The strength of the church is in having the Lord Jesus for the Captain of their salvation. Pagan idolatry, which was the worship of devils, was cast out of the empire by the spreading of Christianity. The salvation and strength of the church, are only to be ascribed to the King and Head of the church. The conquered enemy hates the presence of God, yet he is willing to appear there, to accuse the people of God. Let us take heed that we give him no cause to accuse us; and that, when we have sinned, we go before the Lord, condemn ourselves, and commit our cause to Christ as our Advocate. The servants of God overcame Satan by the blood of the Lamb, as the cause. By the word of their testimony: the powerful preaching of the gospel is mighty, through God, to pull down strong holds. By their courage and patience in sufferings: they loved not their lives so well but they could lay them down in Christ's cause. These were the warriors and the weapons by which Christianity overthrew the power of pagan idolatry; and if Christians had continued to fight with these weapons, and such as these, their victories would have been more numerous and glorious, and the effects more lasting. The redeemed overcame by a simple reliance on the blood of Christ, as the only ground of their hopes. In this we must be like them. We must not blend any thing else with this.
12:11 SALVATION, Atonement-- God's people can overcome the devil through the atoning death of Christ on the cross. If we can testify that Christ has covered our sins, we can overcome all evil, sin, and darkness.
12:11 EVANGELISM, Testimony-- Our testimony for Christ not only strengthens others and wins people to our Lord, it even defeats Satan, "the accuser of our brothers'' (v 10). In the power of Christ's death on the cross, Satan was disarmed. Now we can defeat him through Christ's victory and by the word of our testimony if we will totally give our lives to our Lord, even unto death.
(Rev 12:12 KJV) Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
Verses 12-17. The church and all her friends might well be called to praise God for deliverance from pagan persecution, though other troubles awaited her. The wilderness is a desolate place, and full of serpents and scorpions, uncomfortable and destitute of provisions; yet a place of safety, as well as where one might be alone. But being thus retired could not protect the woman. The flood of water is explained by many to mean the invasions of barbarians, by which the western empire was overwhelmed; for the heathen encouraged their attacks, in the hope of destroying Christianity. But ungodly men, for their worldly interests, protected the church amidst these tumults, and the overthrow of the empire did not help the cause of idolatry. Or, this may be meant of a flood of error, by which the church of God was in danger of being overwhelmed and carried away. The devil, defeated in his designs upon the church, turns his rage against persons and places. Being faithful to God and Christ, in doctrine, worship, and practice, exposes to the rage of Satan; and will do so till the last enemy shall be destroyed.
12:12 PRAYER, Worship-- The heavenly rejoicing is because the devil's time is short. Heaven is a place of joy in prayer.
The Woman Persecuted
(Rev 12:13 KJV) And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
- The very wording here makes this appears to be after the birth of Christ that the Devil was cast out. Yet if look in the Bible we see that the devil has been against Gods people from the beginning starting with Eve. This may well place the war just before the garden. This may also mean that until the dark ages that Satan had place and could peruse the Holy Spirit and try to defeat God until the war finally happened.
(Rev 12:14 KJV) And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
(Rev 12:15 KJV) And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
(Rev 12:16 KJV) And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
(Rev 12:17 KJV) And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
- Here we see the Holy Spirit that it could not be defeated thus he attacks the fruit of the Spirit, and so Satan attacked the church of today, the followers of God. Yet there is no victory for him if we keep his testimony which is the mark of Jesus Christ in our lives. This too would support the thought that the war was between the ages. Which is to say
.....
- Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
- Rom 15:6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1 Cor 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
- Phil 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
- 1 Cor 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
- Phil 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
- 2 Th 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
- 2 Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
- 1 Pet 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
- 1 Pet 4:1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
12:17 CHRISTIAN ETHICS, Obedience-- In the face of the coming end of history, God's people are called to a new commitment to obedience, for only the obedient will be able to stand against the evil dragon.
12:17 EVANGELISM, Persecution-- Those who stand for Christ and bear a strong testimony will be persecuted; yet, the Lord promises victory to His faithful witnesses. See note on 2:13.
