People bearing the Stafford name increased in number and influence until one of the counties of England, Staffordshire, came to bear the name. In 1298 a barony was crested and a crest was formed, a ducal coronet and a demi-stan rising with wings elevated. The motto is inscribed in Latin, "Abstulit qui debit" "He has gained who has given".

The coat of arms of the Staffords has often changed to suit the varying rank of the family, and the motto likewise has not always been the same. At one time it was "Virtus basis vitoe"; at another "Frangas von flected". The former, "Virtue the corner-stone of life" was probably the motto used by the family at the time the first immigrant arrived in New England. Other coat of arms of the Staffords reads: Or, a chevron gules between three saltiers of the same. In English this is - A gold field with a red chevron and three red crosses.

The Stafford family is of Scotch-Irish descent and one of the first Staffords that came to the U.S. was Thomas born abt.1605 in Warwickshire, England. He emigrated from Warwickshire to Plymouth, New England, about 1623. A few years later he moved to Providence, RI then Warwick, RI in 1652, where he died in 1677. He was a millwright, and built the first mill in this country, at Plymouth for grinding corn by water.
