Thomas Watkins "of Swift Creek" in 1760 named among his heirs "son Joel" to whom he gave some slaves and sets of shoemaker's cooper's and carpenter's tools. He had previously helped that son to acquire land in Amelia County. On 15 January 1752, "Joel Watkins of Amelia" made bond in that county for his marriage to "Rhody Gresham" daughter of Barbary Gresham". This was late for his first marriage for a man born in 1716, as Francis N. Watkins alleged, but no evidence of an earlier marriage has been found. The bride had to have her mother's consent when she married, so it can be calculated that she was born in the 1730's. Her father's name is now unknown, but her mother's maiden name was "Holcombe".
