SERMONS FROM THE PULPIT OF First Baptist Church Stanfield, North Carolina

Reverend Ray Osborne, Senior MinisterPlease Note That With The Exception Of "Special Days," As A Rule I Will Follow The Revised Common LectionaryA Homily For
Wednesday of Holy Week "Jesus - Our Helper and Our Deliverer" Isaiah 50:4-9a, Psalm 70, Hebrews 12:1-3
I went out this week in pursuit of a gas grill. You know - Summer is coming and Lent will be over and I am looking forward to grilling some mighty big steaks! When we found out that it was $20 extra to have one put together I said: "Oh I can do that!" To which Stephanie said: "I don’t want to be around when you do!" "Why not?" I asked. "Because when you start putting something together and can’t get it right you get so angry! That’s why!"
Well I have to admit she’s right. I figure that if the only tools shown on the box are a screwdriver and a hammer and a thingamgeegie - I ought to be able to put it together!
There is also the manly pride issue. You men know what I’m talking about. We want our wives and children to think that we can do it all without interference from anyone.
The truth is - we can’t. In fact the Bible teaches that without God we can do nothing. There is no disgrace in admitting our inadequacies. Especially when it comes to life.
One thing I have gotten use to over 19 years in the ministry is not having all the answers. Countless times I find myself facing brokenhearted families who look at me with tears in their eyes and they only speak one word - "Why?" I have learned to say "I don't know." I don't know why good people suffer. I don't know why children die. I don't know why people are crippled in the prime of their lives. I don't have all the answers to the "why?" questions. Many times I simply don't know. But this much I do know. The Bible teaches us also that we can do "All things through Christ Jesus" who strengthens us. And that means when a good person suffers Jesus is there to help and deliver. It means when a child dies Jesus is there to help family members find comfort. It means when an individual is crippled in the prime of life that Jesus is there saying "Lean on me." But most of all it means that when my little five year old son said: "Jesus come into my heart." He did!
I often use this illustration: Picture a ladder in your mind. Now picture the top of that ladder. Figuratively speaking that’s where you and I try to stand in our lives. On top and in control. But there’s a problem with that. If you look closer at the ladder and that top step you will find words - "DO NOT STEP!" There’s a reason for that. It’s the most dangerous place on the ladder to be. Well the top step of our lives contain different words - "RESERVED FOR CHRIST."
Easter is about God’s salvation found in Christ. It’s about you and I having a Helper for everything we ever attempt to do or experience in life. It’s about you and I having a Deliverer to deliverer us from sin, to deliver us from heartache, to deliver us from a stormy sea in life. It’s about the Messiah and making Him the most important person in our lives. How about it? Won’t you call out tonight and let Jesus be your Helper, your Deliverer, and your Closest Friend?
Amen
