BUTCH: (Butch enters with head down & says nothing)
MOM: (Mom appears) Did you have a good day, Butch?
BUTCH: (doesn't say anything but shakes his head no)
MOM: Why don't you just tell me about your day.
BUTCH: At lunch some of the guys started telling jokes. Billy told a dirty joke, and I got up and left!
MOM: Good for you.
BUTCH: Oh, yeah, good for me! Good old Holy Butch, That's what they called me the rest of the day.
MOM: Doing the right thing is not always easy.
BUTCH: What were you making last night with that rough material?
MOM: A corduroy jacket for Chris.
BUTCH: Corduroy sure is bumpy. Did you know they used to make corduroy roads?
MOM: (Mom shakes her head no)
BUTCH: Well, they did. They were made out of logs laid side by side. Imagine riding in a wagon or stage coach down a corduroy road.. Bump-bump-bumpity-bump.
MOM: It would be rough. (pause) Part of the highway to heaven must be corduroy.
BUTCH: It sure must be. I guess I hit a corduroy a corduroy stretch today. It was pretty bumpy.
MOM: But you made it across. You didn't let the rough spots wreck you.
BUTCH: There are worse things to be called than "Holy Butch!" I think I'll go ride my bike for a while. There's one stretch of Cowen Street that's almost as bumpy as a corduroy road. It's kinda fun to ride on it.
MOM: How about you boys and girls. Have you run into some rough roads lately? Maybe you had to go down a different road from your friends. Maybe you had to say no or take a stand against some things they were doing.
BUTCH: Living a Christian life is not always easy, but it is always best. See you later, boys and girls.
MOM: Bye for now.
