JOHNNY: Ernie, did you hear about the boy in Chicago? One of our missionaries was talking about it.
ERNIE: No, I missed his talk. Tell me about it.
JOHNNY: This boy was selling papers on the street corner and the weather was really bad and this boy had nothing but a cardboard box in an alley for a home.
ERNIE: I sure wouldn't want to live under those conditions.
JOHNNY: Neither did he. He was so cold and desperate that he asked a policeman if he knew where a cold boy could find a warm bed for the night.
ERNIE: He could have gotten into trouble doing that.
JOHNNY: He could have but didn't. The policeman told him to go to this particular house, knock on the door and when someone answered the door, for him to say, John 3:16.
ERNIE: That is strange. What happened?
JOHNNY: He said to himself that he didn't understand this John 3:16 but it sure made a cold boy warm. The lady came back and asked if he was hungry.
ERNIE: I'll bet he was.
JOHNNY: He said he was a little hungry, he had not eaten for a couple of days and he thought he could stand a little food. She prepared a table full of food for him. He said, John 3:16, I don't understand it but it sure make a hungry boy full.
ERNIE: Makes me hungry just thinking about it.
JOHNNY: After eating she show him upstairs where there was a big bathtub filled with warm water and he sat in it and soaked for a while. As he soaked he thought, John 3:16, I don't understand it, but it makes a dirty boy clean. I've not had a real bath in my whole life.
ERNIE: He had never had a bath?
JOHNNY: No. Afterwards she showed him a feather bed for him to sleep in and even tucked him in. She turned the lights out and he peered out the window at the snow and thought to himself, John 3:16, I don't understand it, but it makes a tired boy rested.
ERNIE: I'll bet he had a good nights sleep.
JOHNNY: He sure did and the next morning she had prepared him a nice breakfast. She then asked him if he understood John 3:16. He said he didn't. And right there in front of the fireplace as she explained it he gave his heart to Jesus.
ERNIE: That's great. A story with a happy ending.
JOHNNY: Yes it is. You see, he sat there and said, John 3:16, I don't understand it but it sure makes a lost boy saved. You know, I don't understand John 3:16 either. How God was willing to send His Son to die for me and how Jesus would agree to do such a thing.
ERNIE: Johnny, I don't understand it either, but it sure does make life worth living. Bye boys and girls. Bye Johnny.
JOHNNY: See you Ernie. Bye everyone.
