There is conflicting information in family records and public records for some of the dates below. I have used records given to me by Helen (Steele) Smith that were from Family Bibles. This family will be expanded as descendants come forward to join in our "Home Coming" project.

Edmond Steele, the third son and fifth child of Richard and Elenor (Marlow) Steele was born 9 March 1812. He married Phebe McMeans 2 September 1837 Tazewell County, Virginia. Phebe was born circa 1816, and was the daughter of Elihue and Nancy (Griffitt) McMeans.
Some of the children of Edmond and Phebe and their issue:
1. Francis Marion Steele, born 30 November 1837 (other records show his birth date as 15 September 1838), Tazewell County. According to records in Richmond, he married 2 Oct 1858, Malissa J. Prater, born 1840, Russell County, Virginia, (daughter of John and Patsy Prater.) Francis and Mialissa were divorced 21 May 1878, Tazewell County. Bible records show the marriage date as 25 October, 1858 (This is the one that I prefer), while yet another record in Tazewell, shows the marriage date as 3 September 1857.

1(5) George Elbert Steele born 12 Aug 1866, married circa. 1891, in Buchanan County, Virginia, to Watie Catherine Horn, born 20 Feb 1868, Buchanan County, Virginia, daughter of Squire Washington Horn and Mary Ann Compton. George died 11 Dec 1946, Buchanan County. Waite Catherine died 26 Nov 1960, Buchanan County. They are buried in Ward Cemetery. According to a newly found descendant, Clifford M. Presley,Mary Lou Steele (Daughter of George Elbert Steele) married William Hyter Presley. Their son. Elden Presley is the father of Clifford M. Presley.

The information on the family of Nancy Jane Steele and Francis Willis was provided by Jack Crawford, great grandson of Nancy and Francis. Their daughter, Mary Magdaene Willis Crim Hess was the grandmother of Jack Crawford.. Mary Magdlene marrried first to a Crim and was last married to John D. Hess (Apple John) from the Spruce Pine area of Russell County.

3. Patten E. Steele married 25 November 1875, Rachel Allen

Additional information on Patton's family was posted in the guestbook, 7 June 2000 by Casey Heisler Casey wrote:

"Patton married Rachel Jane Allen in about 1875. In 1899 they and five of their six living children and one daughter-in-law emigrated from Tazewell County by train to Washington Court House, Ohio.

Their sixth child, a 16 year old daughter (Stella) eloped just prior to their departure with Silas H. Belcher, and remained in Virginia.
