39th Veterans Who Endured Captivity in the South

The distribution of rations to the prisoners at Andersonville Prison, Georgia (from the National Archives).
Editor's note: One day I was talking with a friend of mine who was interested in the 39th and their service in East Kentucky. He asked me, "I'd heard that one of the guys in the 39th died in Andersonville." By the tone of his voice, I could tell he was a bit doubtful. He seemed genuinely incredulous when I told him that a number of the 39th's veterans were held in Andersonville, and that a quite a number had died there. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, some of the 39th veterans made it as far as Andersonville where they paid the ultimate price for devotion to the Union.
