Plank enlisted as a Private on 07 August 1862...in Company I, 75th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 02 September 1862; mustered out on 12 June 1865 in Nashville, TN." He gave his residence as "Ustick, Illinois". They cite "Illinois: Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men. (IL Roster) Published in 1900."
Correspondence with Tom Hanson: "John served in the Civil War, Illinois 75th Infantry, Light Artillery, Company I, (Whiteside County Company)."

1 John H. PLANK m Rowena Lucretia MONROE b in New York [Ref 1]. In a conversation with Ella Mae (Carrington) Gardner, she said Rowena was thought to be related to President James Monroe. No verfication has been made. Ella also stated that John Plank had served as a union sergeant in the Civil War and was present at the surrender of Lee to Grant at Appomatox Courthouse and later became a Methodist minister [Ref 2].
